Hello I was cruising at about 80 mph when my alternator light came on I was on the freeway and there was no exit for a while but I did check the engine temp and oil pressure and both were good infact the temp never went above 200 degrees. Anyway On the freeway I started to hear a really lound knocking, clicking tapping that sounded like it was coming from the lifters. So when I stopped, the engine was over heating. When i got off the freeway I noticed the noises decreased with the rpm of the engine. But the temp never went over 200, but an hour later the temp was still at 180. So when i stop I turned the engine off and opened the hood there was no more alternator belt and the water was boiling over. It is being towed home as I wright this. So what do you guys think what should I check first is there any diagnosis please help.

    Willy,
I would get another Temperature gauge, because the one you have doesn't work. (what brand is it?) When your alternator belt broke, the fan and water pump stopped turning, and shortly after that you overheated. Hope you didn't warp or hurt anything. Replace the fan belt, fill the cooling system, and start her up while keeping your fingers crossed. Once she is running at normal temps, check for leaks/noises, and change your oil. Good luck.
