Hi all. I have a 10" 4500 stall TQ, with only four runs on it, runs were not good, seemed like I hit the riv limiter fairly hard nice and early. Anyhow, started the car up the other day and it's clanking, for want of a better word. Nothing in the engine, oil pressures good and all that, starter not loose, nothing hitting bellhousing. Now....could something be completely broken in the TQ thats banging around? I've not drained the trans yet to see if there is any metal in there. Would a busted TQ show up metal in the trans fluid? Seems like it would. Final question, how does one tell if the TQ is south? I figure, I'll disconnect the three bolts holding it to the flex plate and spin it by hand and see if the clanking is there. It clanks under starting very loud, but it's hard to tell if it makes much noise with the engine running as open headers. Thanks as always.
If the TQ is south, I'm mad, four runs and they were really crummy runs.

Len, I guess I'd try disconnecting the converter from the flex plate and spinning it by hand, but I'd also check out the flex plate for a crack. One other thing is there a baffle in the oil pan?? I had a stock one break off in an old motor, I think the exhaust could just cause a vibration and have it break. I heard it, then noticed that the dip stick went in hard and was hitting something. Just a thought, keep us informed.
