Will a 2004R stand up to the torque of the Buick 455? Stock build, no racing, just daily driver. I was planning on doing a pro-built automatic rebuild kit for the 2004R, but before I waste a little money and alot of time, can someone help me out? Thanks, Scott
I've had mine for about 3 years. No complaints. Just be prepared. After it's all said and done, I spent about $3,500. It's a lot just to get an extra 2 mpg's. But it's great on the highway in the summer with the top down.
well Phil, I dont think he's putting quite the motor in that you have ... and its more than just 2-3mpg. If you drive the car ALOT its all that extra wear your saving from buzzing the motor 6-700 rpms higher There are guys here that are running pretty close to stock (if not totally stock) 200R4's behind mild or stock 455's. Dont hammer it to death and it wont die
If you look at the parts inside of one of those tranny's you would wonder how they work behind anything bigger than a 4 banger. Peace,beeler
I've been running mine for about 10K miles so far, but it was beefed up to handle the 455. With the stock rear gears, I get around 20 MPG cruising at 70-75.
I only have a 350 in front of my 2004R but the engine is built to around 375hp. The trans and converter are stock out of an 87 GN with a transgo kit. The trans had 48,000 miles on it when I got it and I have put another 6,000 miles on it and 77 passes down the dragstrip so far and have had no issues with it whatsoever. I love it. I have 4.10 gears with 27" tires and it cruises at 2,000rpm at 55mph and about 2,400 at 70mph. The best of both worlds without a doubt. Bill
I am going to put a GN 2004r tranny in my 64 Lark with a 520hp/555tq 455. I currently have a SP400 in it now. Is the transmission the same length as a SP 400. I also have a 67 floor shifter in the car. Is that going to work? I dont race it but a couple of street runs with MT radials will occur!
I had a th400 in my car before swapping in the 200-4R. No prolems. If memory serves me right, the length is the same, but I did have the driveshaft redone for the yolk.
The driveshaft is the same length for the TH350 and 2-speed as it is on the 200-4R. I believe the TH400 shaft is shorter. Bill
My tranny builder told me to go out and beak mine and then we would fix the weak links. That was 10,000 miles ago. I have about 450 hp and run Nitto drag radials all the time. He did say I need to start collecting billet parts for dealing with the Procharger next year.

Hey Ed, Did you do your swap yet? I've got a Grand Nat 200r4 laying around I was gonna throw in my 67 with the 67 shifter and console. I'm wondering how well this will fit in the console with the factory shifter since there's another click down low and it doesn't look like there's any room for it. Ian
