I have a Stg 1 head 455 big block going into my 71 GSX-Clone, 10.1 pistons, Edelbrock intake, 800cfm Q-jet, 1 7/8 Headers & most likely a 4 spd trans. I bought & installed a TA 413 Cam W/required springs/lifters kit. Anyone know if this is a good cam for street use & occasional track run. How's the idle & low end torque? It seems that these engines make hp starting at 2k rpm no matter what cam you have...suggestions?

i run the similar 113A cam, headers and Qjet, and 3.73 gears, idle is a little rough, i like to idle it about 1000 rpm. it is smooth after take off. low end is great and revs smooth even past 6000 rpm. the 413 is one of the most popular street strip cams. gears would be the factor with your 4 speed, if you have 3.43 gears or lower you will be fine. if you have 3.23 or higher you might consider a different cam to match your combo.

I also run the 113A cam from Poston's. I idle mine at around 750-800. Idle is definitely noticeable, but not a window rattler. Provides good vacuum for power brakes. Revs right past 6000 rpm if I let it. Tons of torque. My car is HEAVY and I've managed a 1.62 60' time. I love it.

    From TA's catalog:

"Good bracket cam, but still streetable. Strong mid-range, top end power, plenty of torque across the whole power range. Roller rockers & valve springs recommended. 2500-3000 stall convertor recommended. Fair idle (heavy lump). 9.5:1 CR or more

Alan Wander runs this cam (TA 413) and it sounds killer.

    cam?

I have a 84 t-type. I used a 73 block with a 70 rotating assembly. 68 stage 1 400 heads with bowl work and light porting and I'm using 68 1.6 rockers. I feel like I have to stay around .500 lift because my valve train is factory 68 parts and aftermarket valve springs. I have a lunati 33302 cam. It's 224/234 at .050. .480/.503 lift. 112 lobe separation. 1 7/8 ta headers. poston intake which I plan to change to a performer. and a 3.73 posi. carb 850 barry grant. and a MsD. and a 200r4 with mods and a 2400 stall. I should be around 11 to 1 which I think would make the cam too small. it left hard and ran a dull 14.0 @97mph. I would like to put the biggest cam I can without killing the valve train as I am very poor. Also I use kenne bell adjustable pushrods. My thinking was somewhere around 250@50 and a .500 lift not sure about the lobe centers. These parts were contributed by my dad would appreciate any input. I want to run 12s.

Get theDCR calculator and play around with cam timing to end up with a DCR around 7.8-8.2.

    cam

My dad said I was off on my compression at 11 to 1. But my question was is there a cam that would pick the car up? The block is a standard 73 block it is not decked. The rotating assemble is the orignial 1970 rotating assembly. The book shows it at 10 1/4. 68 heads have some bowl work and milled .080. Doesn't pull hard down the track. Wondering if our cam is too small and wondering if there is one that you have used that would work better? Thank you for time and apreciate any suggestions.

a good cam would be a poston 113 if you want to go hydraulic if the valve covers come out easy sice you already have adj. pushrods I would use ta 212s solid lifter cam if you dont have ac also sounds like the stall speed is a little low to me you woud be better off with around 3500 with that weight car and a better cam also would use the ta intake vs edelbrock for your purposes good luck walt

IMO, you should be running at least high to mid 12s, if your combo is fine tuned, what is your timing set at?? what were your 60 ft times? even with the best matched cam for your set up,if all you do is swap cams i can see you only picking up a few tenths, i think your set up needs to fine tuned or there is some reason your moter is having commpression issues, for example if your pushrods are to tight your valves are never closing all the way and is bleeding off commpression this can cause a huge power loss, but the car will still run fine, or you are not running total timing at 32-36 degress all in at around 2000 - 2500 rpm, just 10 degrees off can cost you 100 h/p. i also tried the poston intake useing a 1'' spaces and was still running 12.5's,at108mph just my 2 cents.

before going to the motor what size tires are you running and what kind of fuel system are you working with you might be starving for fuel

    Scott,

Do you have the figures for the "Dynamic Stroke Length Calculator" ?
    Thanks!

dazcunfuz .080 off the heads? Try using adjustable push rods. The push rods are to long and are killing your motor.

    Crank stroke is 3.9
    Rod length is 6.6
ADV ICA comes from the cam results automatically
