Totally straight and true when I checked it Larry.
Removed outer shims and tightened like a normal person, instead of my bad habit of over tightening. (Really dumb with white metal).
Started several times level and drove it...seems Good.
    Thanks Bill and Larry

NOW Flex Plate is making a clatter...just started...in Balt on ATM repair but I had the Rino Ramps with me.
3 BOLTS tight, don't see any cracks and totally true when I marked Starter.
With brake on, no noise, even a 5-6k rpm.
Figure it out when I get home.
    Thanks, Mart

How do you know it is the flex plate?

True Larry..Or trans...you put brake on a it doesn't clatter. Even at 6000 rpm...trans just now started to slip today... 303k on it
    Rebuilt at 92k in 1/1991
Now the starter is starting the grinding every 4th or 5th time.
    Thanks

Is that what a crack in the Flex Plate will do? Thanks

If for some reason, the pinion to flex plate clearance is tight, it will grind. There is no way to adjust that with the stock starter. I had this problem with my engine. Jim used an SFI flex plate, and it is a nice unit, but it must be a bit different than a stock flex plate. I was using a mini starter I got here on V8 from Jamie. It started making noise and was about 6 years old, so I replaced it with a Delco rebuilt. It too was grinding. It stopped working completely after a few months. I then went with the Robb Mc mini starter. You can adjust that starter pinion to flex plate clearance using shims, and I needed to as the pinion was nearly touching the flex plate. I actually had to get an additional shim from Robb to get the clearance in spec. I also needed a 1/32" shim between the block and starter for back lash. Haven't had any problems since.

Not sure why you are having grinding issues unless it is an oddity of your flex plate or block. Are you sure there are no runout issues?

See how the flex plate to pinion clearance changes?

It isn't always easy to see a flexplate crack. But it is usually easy to get your starter shimmed correctly. You should be able to see what is up with the inspection cover off.

Thanks Larry and John...I left the cover off until I could be 100 percent sure that starter was not going to grind...
I'll check it out better when I get back to PA...Thanks again..Mart

Wow. I got mine from Rock Auto and they boxed the box. It was the same part. But I got it like 2 years ago and they were getting $56 (if I remember correct), but now like $70+.

Hey Mart... when the wheel gets bolted onto the crank, check the run out with a dial indicator and again after the torque converter is installed. Just sayin'... easier during than after! That gouge looks like a locomotive did a burnout on it. WOWEEEE! ws
