Can anybody tell me what numbers to look for on a 65 dual quad grand sport? I'm lookin at one and need to know for sure. thanks chris.
gran sport vin in 65 the 425 dual quad code was LX, regular single four barrel 425 was a LW, and a 401 motor was coded LT.
There's nothing in the vin or on the data tag to denote a Gran Sport. Look for LT on the block to designate a dual quad option. The dual quad and GS options were seperate items. Larry
vin # LT does not denote a dual quad motor. if the car is a real gran sport, it will have the dual quad motor as it was part of the gran sport package. it will have a LX code. the other post is wrong telling you it should be LT. the LT code is for a 401 C.I.D. the last 5 or 6 numbers of the motor number should match the 5 or 6 numbers of the vin #. on the side of the trans you should find a metal tag and it should be a BC code. the car should have a posi rear-end, most popular was the 3:42.
Your right about the LT. LT = 401, LW =425, LX =425 dual quad. Trying to do to many things a once this morning. Numbers matching is a big deal and so is the right engine. A "T" anything is a bad sign. Build sheets are nearly impossible to find on these too. I heard the factory thought they looked like garbage in a car of this caliber and most were tossed. Larry
I didnt but my buddy did i'll post some pics after he picks it up,he says it drives good runs even better.
65 riv My buddy picked the riv up today it needs some work but it has some options am-fm with reverb works to wow man! auto dim headlights, cruise, air blows cold and the topper a dual quad motor runs good too. Here's the vin 494475h910557 and the data plate ST 6549447fb 60000 TR 629 SS ES 2R 4F 50 I found 2 sets of numbers on the block in front of the valley pan 4I1048504 and 2I226335 also it was rebuilt in 84 the guy who rebuilt it stamped his name and the date on the block.Kinda cool i think. Is therany more numbers i need to find to tell me what motor it is? thanks chris the intake number is B1357106L
There should still be a two leter code in front of the valley pan on the drivers side. From the looks of it, it doesn't look like the numbers match and the engine may be a replacement. Larry
numbers chris, riv2x4 is thinking the same thing as me. clean off the lip better, should find a LX- LT- LW or something. i agree it's not a number's matching car but it still sounds like a sweet car. what did your buddie pay for it and were still waiting on pictures.
Hi, dont the 4I... stand for 401 cui 62-engine and th 2I... for 364 cui 62-engine? I have a 4I.. engine in my 61 Electra which as far as can understand is a 62 401 engine. I could be wrong though.
I think SweBuick is correct about the 4I being a 62 401. Nice catch. They had to do some work to match it up to the trans too. You can't just easily go from a dynaflow or stick to a SP 400 if that is still the original trans. Larry
The 364 was not available in 62. 4I was the 4bbl 401 and 2I was the 2bbl 401. The #s given seem to contradict, but depending on where they were located it may make sense. Before 1965, the vin #s broken down left to right as series, year and assembly plant followed by the 6 digit production #. I think 4I1048504 is the vin # of the original car for that engine. That would mean 4 for Invicta series, I for 1962, 1 for the Flint, MI assembly plant followed by the 6 digit production #. 4I1048504 would have been stamped on the drivers side of the valley pan rail if my thinking is correct. The 2I226335 would have been on the passenger side of the valley pan rail and would have designated it originally as a 62 2bbl 401. The rest of the 2I # does not make sense and does not seem to be the typical date code that usually follows the engine designation. Maybe the previous owner added a few more #s to that side to confuse people for some unknown reason? You did say the previous owner had stamped other things on the engine. Anyway, my best guess is that the engine started life as a 2bbl 401 in a 62 Invicta assembled at the Flint, MI plant. Cheryl
