Since you work at a parts store take off the alt. and have it tested. I would charge the battery with a charging and load test it. It maybe the voltage regulator on the firewall if the alternator test out ok.

How hot did it get? Hot enough to quit running?

good luck and welcome to the board.

Did you let it cool down after it died? GM's have a problem with hot soaking the starter solenoid and not wanting to start if they get too hot. I'd change the voltage regulator and test the alternator since it sounds like you might have gotten the system hot and then when you got on it the combined heat and upped alternator output might have toasted either some of the internal stuff in the alternator and/or the regulator. I'd also check the condition of the wiring since with a motor swap he might have jerry-rigged up the charging and starting system since the car was either a 300 V8 or a 225 V6 and I don't know how well the wiring harness fits a 455.

  4. i brought the car a new batt to see if it would start. and nuthing. the car has all lights. they all come on. you can hand turn the crank. its just you go to start the car and when you turn the key it make now sound at all its just quiet.

the car had a 301=0 v-8 in it orignally all the wireing is new bught i let it sit over night and ill see if it will turn over before i leave to work if not im gonna buy a new alt and regulator

    sence it a 72' 455 would i buy a volteger reg for a 72 or a 64?

'64 since its the body harness that feeds it. I don't think GM had done the internal regulated alternator by then but I could be wrong. Jamie owns a charging shop so I'd trust his answers.

Were you manually shifting it when it happened? The neutral safety switch broke on my Wildcat once and I didn't figure it out until I notice the backup lights were on when it was in park! I'd find a remote start switch, connect it to the big positive lug on the starter, put the other end on the "S" small post and hit the button. Make sure it's in park or neutral first!

  9. ok so to day i bought a new

    alt.
    volt reg.
    new thermastat.
4core rad witch was to long to put in the car so im gonna get one that fits tomarro.

now you guys say it might be the safty nutreal switch.

tomarro when i go to work ill pick up a new one of thoes. and this weekend im gonna lift up the car to look and see if everything is connected on the starter.

oo and when i put the new ault. on and went to put the bat. back in the car when i put the positive on and tryed to put the negitive on it shot sparks everywere and i was wondering if maby i put the ground and bat wire on the rong sides. of the ault????? would this be the cause of shooting sparks?

as for shifting it manual i did it like once or twice but not when the car died when the car died. was after i got on it for like 10sec and when i slowed back down to speed it sputters a little bit and then died and would not turn over. you can turn the cran with your hands so the motor is not frove up. but im gonna get a safty nutreal switch tomarro...

  10. i instaled the new volt reg and the new ault. the nutral safty switch under the dash does not have ne thing pluged into it.... is the switch on the transmition. the car is a 64 and the engine n trans are out of a 72. wild cat so i turn the key and still no sound im gonna pull the starter and have it tested. gen light still comming on.

  11. humm getting late im gonna work on to tomarro hopefully i get it started.

myabe he is reading the airclaner decal:laugh: 445?

  15. humm i got the block number and it was an orignal wild cat. 1970...srry i posted a 72 but thats that the guy told me it was so now i know the engine is a 70 and the air cleaner decal says 455-4 it had to be the starter i pulld it today and had it tested it would spin but not engage now the car will start if i use a screw driver and touch the starter. but turning the key it still wont start im wireing in a new ignition right now well my dad n bro are.

so the car has a new starter, ault, volt reg, 4 core rad. and i was gonna replace the damn thermistat and the f$%k bolt head broke off now i have to take it to a shop.

so the car starts as of now. just have to finish wireing the new egnition in. and it should be alive:laugh:

and the drags opend today so im gonna take it out tomarro:3gears:

im ordering a set of headers for it tomarro. and a 3in flowmaster exhuast.

is 3" ok ot should it be 2 /14 or 2 /12 let me know that the best size for the engine.
