Hi, I have been thinking of buying this 64 Sportwagon I saw a while back on the net. The owner was offering it to me for $1100 and I'm trying to determine how low I could go before I become a lowballer. Let me describe the car and its condition. INTERIOR: The car comes with the third row seat (described as in great shape and looks good in the picture). The rest of the seats will need to be reupholstered and a new carpet is needed. The front headliner looks totaled and the 2nd headliner can be restitched. The owner said that the skyglass did leak water and I'm not sure if the back seat has water damage (there's a a big stain and the seat is torn in a section/ bloated) The dashboard is cracked (4 cracks and two dips and warped, has its original radio (unknown condition, broken antenna), and the front seat is power operated (claims it works). It has tilt column, power windows (work slow and motor for tailgate window is missing), AC all present, and door panels look good.
EXTERIOR: The car appears all straight with no damage. The bumpers (especiually rear) look great. The paint has surface rust on the roof and it looks a bit more rusty (darker colored) around the driver back roof (next to the skyglass). The tailgate has paint burn off with redish? primer showing in areas. The owner claims that it is pitted in areas, but no holes are present. The floorboards are good except for two 8" areas of "heavy" rust. The spare tire well has surface rust as well (no holes). The car is located in CA, but the plates are a reissue from 5 years ago.
MECHANICALLY: The owner says that the motor (300 nailhead) runs good (says he recently drove it a short distance). Trans works too. But he drove it about 20 miles a few years ago and the motor was slowly getting hot. He thinks the water pump is bad.
CONCLUSION: I am pretty interested in this wagon. I want to fix it up slowly and plan on using it as a somewhat daily driver ( When I need to move big stuff, and once in a while driving-high gas and bicycle work in good weather). I don't have a "money tree" so I just want to know what would be a decent price for a wagon in this condition. The only way I can get the car would be to fix the water pump, change the oil/ tranny fluid down there before I drive home (under 100 miles). Any input :TU: from fellow board members would be appreciated. Thanks, Wayne.

P.S.... I have a 65 Skylark service manual but would appreciate any hints on how hard it would be to change a water pump. Where should I look for a decent water pump and how much would it cost me? I'm not the most "mechanically inclined" person and have never changed a water pump before. Any hints or step-by- instructions instructions would also be appreciated. Thanks, Wayne

1100$ seems fair,i paid 1,000 for mine and it is currently undergoing complete restoration,it came from North Carolina.I had to replace all the window seals on all the windows due to age but the channels were good.I think that is a good price and they seem to be going up for the wagons.Should be a fun daily driver :TU:

I paid 770.00 for mine and have been driving it for almost three years in decent weather. All I did was put wheels water pump and in primer. I love it.

Thanks for your input. I I'm also just worried that the rust is worse than it may be. I have one pic to show: Pic 1-The rust along the side looks deep. (This is the worst rust that is visible).

Shouldnt be too hard to make a channell if it needs to be replaced, with the options on the car its a good buy, just be careful removing the windows, dont want to have to pay for another set! The seals on mine were so bad it was easy to get them out, good luck :TU:
