The Charging system in my 65 skytop has been giving me trouble, the battery
was 8 years old and I replaced it with a new 700cc amp Duralast

When I first start the car the GEN light stays on, until I either bring up the RPMs or with the cover off gently touch the Batt side relay and it starts charging, I cleaned the terminals, and added a ground wire from the battery to the case of the regulator.
But I still have the problem

    Is it the regulator?
The wiring from the Alternator to the regulator?
    Or the Alternator?
As far as I know all the Diodes and the 3 winding sets are good (no shorts or opens, no noise in the radio)

Also it seams to act like a old DC Generator whereas when its low RPM the voltage is low. when its high RPM the voltage is higher, is this the characteristic of older AC Generators to act like DC generators or is the problem something else?

(I have not done the Full Field test on the AC Generator as of yet because the voltage will get up to 14.9 volts under normal load)

could be a number of things.EASY CHEAP FIX if it charges ok after turn on,go to a smaller diameter alt pulley, turns quicker, quicker turn on :TU:

I talked to someone who has a 80's Buick and he is having the same problem
Although he tells me that when he cleans his battery cables the problem goes away (and thats with the starter running ok)

Actually it is an Alternator (Old habit from 65 GM called them AC Generators) The problem has gone away for now but I would like to figure out if its poor conections on the regulator
