I have the 310 in my 65 Skylark Convertible. I love the pickup it has, and it jumps off the line. It is all stock with custom dual exhaust. (My family owns a muffler shop) My questions are: 1) Is this a viable engine. Would love to hear some information from others on there experience with this motor. 2) Are there aftermarket dress ups available. Or is it better to just leave it all stock and re-paint as needed. This was my fathers car, he bought it about 8 years ago. Kept it in storage and had planned on fixing it up. Unfortunately he passed away and left it to me. I love to drive it, at a 65 mph cruise on the highway it just sails, and in the city it jumps off the line. Any information on like vehicles will be greatly appreciated. I have owned this car about a year and a half now its time to get serious with it. I will post some pictures this weekend. Thanks in advance. :beer
I believe what you have is the venerable 300 CID with 310 Ft. LBs of torque. Poston Enterprises has a lot of performance parts for this engine as well as Kenne Bell but not a lot of appearance type stuff is available. If it runs good and doesn't use oil or smoke I would just clean and paint it up. Does it have a 2bb or 4bb carb? Like you say they are pretty peppy just the way they are.
Roger is correct it is a 300 CI inch,I have the same engine and yours would be a 2 barrel.I would not change the original engine,I have been looking for a 4 barrel intake and carb for mine for some time and was going to put it on and some other few internal mods and maybe porting and polishing but want to keep the original outward appearence of the engine.Others on the board have told me they get some really respectible performance out of these small engines with minor mods,I hope you keep the original engine as these cars in unaltered form are getting somewhat hard to come by.Oh my experience with my 300 has been 100% positive, great little engine.
they are good dependable motors BUT the only thing as far as performance parts are cams & headers that may/may not fit.kenne-bell hasnt made buick parts for years :error: if you want performance, get a 350.otherwise enjoy it as-is :TU: the "pep"is actually due to the st-300 transmission!
I was lucky with the one I had up until a year ago in that the previous owner had already rebuilt it with Kenne Bell mild cam and Poston lifters. At that time which was probably 10 years prior you could still get Kenne Bell items. Now I don't know but I think I could still find a web page for them. Always wondered why he didn't just use a Poston cam. He had also already converted it to a 4bb too. I think those 4bb manifolds are getting real hard to find now a days. It also had a th350 tranny and dual exhausts so it was a real nice running and sounding package. Still miss it but my head got turned by the 56. Pretty, but not near as much fun to drive!
Many years ago I bought a 66 Skylark with a blown 300 motor. Unable to locate a goood motor I found a 67 340-4. real cheap. It bolted in as if it was original to the car. I used the 300 Valve covers, fit perfectly. Bolted up to the 300 trans. No one could tell the difference until they challanged me. I couldn't keep tires on the dam car. NO posi then. You gain an extra 40 cubes and about 50 Hp. A little bit heavier than the 300. Jim Schilf palbuick
This hurts! By the way, Hawkeye Bob, congrats on winning the Big Ten tournament. Too bad you had to beat my Buckeyes. Hope both teams go far. ( Far enough so we can get revenge). Have lots of friends in Iowa so like the Hawkeyes too. From S. Dak. originally so we hayseeds have lots in common.
