65 Riv worth saving?

I bought this parts car as part of a package deal with another 65 GS Clone. I was going to take the parts I wanted to save and give the rest to the salvage yard. I was going to keep the doors, fenders, hood, motor, deck lid, right quarter, glass, some trim, and rear if I could get it out without to much trouble. I don't want to move the car off the trailer since none of the wheels move, so I won't have very much room to work. It took 2+ hours a broken winch, a big MF tractor, and a broken deck board to get it on the trailer:(

The car sat in a farmers field for 10 years. The floor boards are pretty much gone. The front fenders are good. The right rear quarter looks good, the left not so good but repairable. Rockers look good and surprisingly, so does the frame. All glass is good. It has some rust around the rear window. Pretty much would need a complete resto. The engine is a LX code 425 with the normal 4 barrel manifold and valve covers. It does not match the vin. It it fairly complete with all the drive train and most of the interior (poor condition).

Should I sell it as is to someone crazy enough to restore it or do what I planned? What's a car in this condition worth?

I'll give you $185 for the steering wheel and mounting hub, if there are no cracks in it.

You know the LX code is '65 2x4. I understand it does not have the 2x4 still. Does it have a '66 Q-jet intake? Someone might want the motor just because of the LX. The headlight door motors are worth some jack too. You probably already know all this though?

Yeah, I know parts for these are expsensive, that's why I bought the whole car. I didn't know it had an LX block until I looked last night - I thought it was just an LT 401. It turned out to be more complete than I thought and that's why I'm thinking about not parting it. Parting out a car is a bunch of work that I don't have the time for. I have a habit of spending more time taking parts of cars then I do putting them on cars I'm restoring:( I just finished tearing down a 74 Nova because I wanted the rear end. I just couldn't make my self give good parts to the crusher so I stripped the whole car:( Took a couple of days that I should have spent working on one of my other cars.

I hate to even give any of it to the scrap yard, but I don't have room to store another whole car. Chances are, I'll strip what I think I may need as spares/insurance and try to sell the rest as is.

How hard are the rear ends to find? I woud like to keep it, but it looks like a PITA to remove?

    Thanks,
    -Dan

Is it a Posi and what ratio? I'd say a 3:42 Posi in good condition is worth maybe $600+. A 3:07 Posi maybe $250.

If those headlight door motors work there is some $'s there. Any cruise control, am/fm radio, headlight sentinal? Those are $'s too.

If you do part it out I am interested in the steering wheel, hub and horn cap if it is still there.

There are plenty of people looking for a 3:42. You would no problem selling it. If it is a peg-legger 3:07, I don't think it is worth the trouble.

I have been looking for a posi and they all are rare and pricey. Same for that wood wheel. Any chance of more interior and under the hood pics?

I'll get some more pics. I can't open the doors because they hit the trailer since the tires are all flat. I'll get the complete engine numbers also. I was going to swap the wood wheel with the normal one in my other 65.

    Thanks,

Probably just as important is to list all the options. I think floorboards & trunk metal are all reproduced, but I would defer to the Riv guys. As much as I would love parts off this car, a genuine GS is pretty rare and if authenticated it Should be restored.

    Just my nickel 's worth.

I don't think the floorpans and trunks are reproed yet but Classic Fabrications might make them, check the ROA website. They do make patch panels for most of the commonly rusted exterior locations though. I'd rebuild it... its not really that far gone other than the floors. Odd combo with the wood wheel and the low level interior package. If you do part it out there is a lot of high dollar stuff in that car to sell off but like mentioned before, I think it should be restored not canabalized if possible.

That will be tough for me. I have this one also - http://www.thesherwoodgang.com/cars/65GS/dcp_0331.jpg. I don't have the time, space, or money to restore them both. I tried to buy only the black one, but the seller said both or none since this was to be a parts car. I'll figure out something.

Your pictures don't indicate it's all THAT bad. Try posting it for sale. Lord knows we've seen worse sell.

It not junk, but needs alot of work. It does have some neat options such as the power vent windows, the wood wheel, power driver seat, and power trunk. It has the usual pw and ac. I couldn't determine if the rear is posi or not - where is the code on these - pass side front?

I know it's worth more in parts than whole, but parting out a car is time consuming.

    Thanks,

That's a 63-64 parking light pod cover in the trunk and the same interior combo as mine (though mine is the deluxe, different door panels) though its a '65 so it has the black dash vs. the earlier ribbed "Aluminum". Looks well used but not beyond hope. Door skins bolt on so thats not too big of a deal to change out.
    Good stuff list:
    Remote Mirror
    Wood steering Wheel
LX engine with its different distributor and code
    '65 Riv rear bumper assembly
    Power headlight system
    SP400 in Naiilhead pattern
    Possible Posi rear
What looks like rear coat hooks, I don't think my '64 has those and can't remember about my '65 Riv GS
'65 heater valve system and control (for those of us with the goofey '64 and goofier '63 system)

Thats my list of stuff that would sell atleast decently quickly

identifying a posi.. Tom Telesco let me in on this one.. find the fill plug on the passenger's front side of the diff... if the plug is the "socket style" with a square 3/8" hole, then most likely it is an open diff... if the diff has an aluminum tag or a plug with a "male" or square part STICKING OUT, then most likely it's a posi... then there's the good 'ole lift up the rear wheels and turn'um test:TU:
