66 LeSabre 400 question

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by GranSportSedan, Apr 24, 2019.

  1. Would a 66 LeSabre 400 have come with a short tail 400 transmission or a long tail 400 transmission?

It should be a 340, switch pitch 400 with a short tails haft. BTW, that trans will bolt to a 455.

  3. I found a local guy pulling the running 340/4 and st400 out of his LeSabre 400 convertible to install a LS and 6 speed.

If you what drive up to my house I got a ST400 35000 miles.. for the right price... it did come out of a 66 olds delta its a LS... olds used the drivers front wheel for the speedo.

  8. I have a brand new rebuilt st400 from a 67 GS400. I was just curious what transmission would be in the LeSabre to help judge the value of the package..

The 340 is all but worthless. Bop 400s do not bring much money either.

At $500 you could get your money's worth. It ain't cheap rebuilding a ST400 with a s/p converter. The 340 is rather generic, but the carb and 4 bbl intake have value. The 340 crank can be used for a 300 'stroker' if someone want to go that route. Not a screaming deal, but the eng or trans would be good for someone that wants a drop-in solution.

Thats like buying an airplane for the leftover peanuts. Sure the peanuts are good but now you're stuck with a 747.

The intake and carb will sell eventually. The crank is a narrow market and whats it worth? 100 bucks?

I did not notice the 400 was a s/p, sure that brings up the value some, but how much? With no paperwork on the rebuild its a hard sell.

If the op has a need for these parts thats one thing. If he's buying to resell he's wasting his time and money.

  13. I find it interesting how there's so much dislike for the 340 engine. I've had a couple in 66 Skylark in the past and while it's no race car engine, they are peppy. the nice thing is TA has aluminum cylinder heads and roller cams that will fit in them now.

I have no problems with it. The problem is there is no market for it.
