I'm repowering my 67 with a 455 for street use and considering a tremic 6oo 5sp trans with a.68 5th. gear.Any sugestion for my rear gears with a posi.My car came with a 3oo and2sp power glide and i believe2.56 gears.Does my original diff have bolt in axeles? and what does the 8.2 indicate? also what does 2 series and 3 series mean?Ive been using this forum to try to learn as much as i can to know whats involved to upgrade the rearend.Any information would be great.I will be using this car for weekend shows and cruises so have considered the tremic as a way to assist with fuel economy and need some help with the rear end choices. Thanks Bob

    Bob,
Yes your '67 Skylark should have a bolt-in axle 8.2 rearend, probably built on a Buick cast 8.2 housing. 8.2 is the ring gear diameter & this style ring gear was shared with Pontiac through '69 & Olds through mid '67. The stock axles will be of the sealed axle bearing style. Unfortunately, the sealed ball bearing axle design have a long time history of seizing under the wheel bearing, chewing up axles, departing r/e's under slowspeed cornering. This very poor design axle bearing was, remedied by GM & Ford in bolt-in axle application going to tapered axle bearing design in the '70's.

In same situation, it really makes no sense (very expensive/not cost effective)to build off the original weak casting 8.2 Buick or Pontiac 8.2 rear. GM engineers recognized his early on & as a result only the strongest of Pontiac HD Safe-T-Track 8.2 10 bolts have nodular housings which will hold up to 475+ ft/lbs of torque, & that even becomes a stretch in a strong manual trans car. You will be much better served by going to a built up '71-72 8.5 A-body rear which offers much more pinion support (the major weakness of 8.2 10 bolts), & which allows the use of aftermarket 30 spline HD clutch type posi & HD axles. Over the last few years have been building more & more such HD 8.5 A-body rears. Stronger & safer than blueprinted c-clip axle 12 bolts, the 8.5 A-body is the best value street/strip A-body posi rear avail. Need more info, feel free drop me an e-mail resto_services@yahoo.com.
