'67 GS shifter.... rust no more!

    I just wanted to share this with my fellow gearheads and DIY's.
    This is a shifter for a '67 GS that I bought off of ebay. It looks like it was pulled from the bottom of a lake. I bought this stuff called Evaporust that supposedly dissolves rust. Well...... all I can say is it works great!! Check out the before and after pics.....

    So if you guys ever have anything that's rusty and could be submerged completely in this stuff, this is really the best thing you could ever ask for. This is a truly a product that lives up to its advertising!

    Awesome! Guess I should do mine too.

    To add to this subject, where can we source replacement parts for our shifters? I would probably need to replace my floor pan plate, the shift boot and the bushings.

    Evaporust is great. What I find to be just as good and dramatically cheaper is powdered citric acid. I am currently using a 5 gallon batch that has roughly 2 lbs of citric acid dissolved into water. Cost me the equivalent of about 3 dollars USD. Try it!

    I have to ad that once its that clean (and it IS pretty clean!) spray it down with some cold galvanizing spray as a primer. Its thin and really gets into tight spots and flashes off in about 30 seconds; you can literally see it dry. I hang mine in front of the heater duct as I usually do this stuff in the wintertime. Even a fan or air gun will dry it pronto! ws

    I bought 5 gallons of Evaporust recently and love the stuff. I don't know how it works but it sure does remove the rust. It's not some toxic liquid that will eat your skin off. you can reach right in and grab your parts and pour the stuff down the drain when you are done.

    Shifter looks great too bad no one will ever see it once it's installed!

    That's exactly what I did, then hit it with some silvery spray bomb.

    Hey Ed, I'm very interested in your method. Do you have any before and after pics of any pieces you've de-rusted? Where do you purchase the citric acid from?

    I have no idea where any parts could be sourced for these shifters. The bushings were all good on this one except for 1. Luck would have it that I had a bronze bushing that fit perfectly with a little trimming. The rubber boot is virtually impossible to locate. I stopped at a rubber parts manufacturer in Michigan while on vacation to ask if they could reproduce it and they said they would have to make a mold that would cost $3K...........Thanks, see ya!

    The thing I like about the CG spray is being so thin it penetrates stuff like weld ripples etc and is about 99% zinc which halts rust in its tracks. On those bushings, especially the ones with the hair pins, those really look like the old Hurst competition plus shifter bushings. Are they close? Theres always oilite bronze on the lathe too! I can run a batch here this winter if anyone is interested. I say this winter when its -30F and 24" of snow to keep me busy.

    The rubber ones Ive found several that might work in a "Rubber Grommet" set... several styles sizes and thicknesses available from the motor parts. Try Midway truck and auto on 63rd and Cicero(?).

    I take a pic of an old pulley before i throw it in and after. It will take a day or so probably, then I will post. I don't have any pics of other stuff that I have already done.

    I checked it the other day and it was almost ready. I will take the after pic tonight and post in a new thread so maybe more folks will see it and learn the tip. Stay tuned....remember I am on NZ time. Temperatures have been cool here and that slows down the reaction.
