67 Riviera "GS?"

I recently bought a 67 Riv with buckets, console shift and posi. It's solid and the 430 runs great but it needs some resto.Has some dings, needs paint, bumpers rechromed, and bucket seat covers etc. It's original color is SeaFoam green but it was repainted a long time ago as dark metallic green(ugly). The guy I got it from didn't know if it was a GS or not but that didn't bother me cause it's just a cool car and price was right.
    My questions are;
Is there a way to check ID on the car if it's a GS?
    Were all 67 Riv's with buckets/console a GS?
My car has a black single snorkle air cleaner, not the "star wars" kind.Did the GS models only come with the star wars air cleaner?
There are no GS emblems on the fenders.
Where can I get some new seat covers?
    Thanks.

The GS package is not indicated in the VIN.
Buckets and console were available on every 67 Riviera.
All 67 Riviera GS models had the "Star Wars" air cleaner.
GS emblems would have been on the fenders of a GS.

For seat covers that are high quality and correct, go to Legendary Auto Interiors: http://www.legendaryautointeriors.com/

The other items to look for on a 67 to see if it's a GS are the hood insulation retainer (a metal strip that retains the center section of the hood insulation) which wasn't found on the regular model, the 3.42 limited slip rear axle (available on all Rivs but standard on the GS), if the car has a/c, the compressor pulley should be larger with the 3.42 axle.

There are a few other things to look for. If you have a digital camera, I could help you. Just email me by clicking on my name in my signature.

I doubt Legendary has the seat skins. Will they make them for you? I don't know. Herer is where I got mine made.: Ron Fryer's Auto Upholstery - Send Ron your original seat covers and he reproduces them perfectly. Ron has since sold the business, so I can NOT vouch for the new owners. It is worth a phone call. Mine came out like OEM. 360-574-8070. www.autoupholsterykits.com.

What they said.......and be sure to contact Phil, he knows about the little things. I've learned a lot from him. :TU: IMHO.......if it ain't got a posi, unless someone changed it, (and these rear ends are almost bulletproof) chances of it being a real GS are just about nill.

In case you don't know, you can check that by raising the rear wheels off the ground, and with the trans in park, if you can spin one wheel easily and the wheel on the opposite side spins in the other direction, you only have one wheel peel. :(

The trans should be in neutral, I believe. If it's in Park, then the wheels will move opposite. If they moved together, then when the car is on the ground, the car will roll freely downhill.

If you have the rear end out of the car with the tires on it, it's difficult to get the rear to spin left or right...both wheels want to move together (if it's a posi)

That would work also, just a matter of preference I guess. But in nuetral it would be good to have a helper holding the wheel on the opposite side so as to try to prevent it's rotation. Badly worn clutches in a posi would make it appear to be a standard rear end.

If the clutches are in good condition, it should be very difficult to rotate either wheel by hand on a posi with the tranny in park. The reason why is b/c when you do it in park, the spider gears force the clutch packs together slightly causing them to compress and create resistance to slippage.........just my opinion.

The book says to leave one wheel on the ground, put it in neutral, and test with a torque wrench I think the spec is 40 ft. lbs. I think my way is much easier than that. :bglasses:

    Yep,Phil knows his stuff.Very helpful.

How about this way to check the rear end.Put trans in neutral.Jack up rear end(both tires off ground)spin one wheel forward, look and see if other wheel is spinning same direction,if so = posi?...also make a chalk line on driveshaft and a chalk line on one wheel.Spin the wheel and count number of revolutions of driveshaft versus the wheel = gear ratio?

    Thanks

Hey Tom, Congrats on the new ride. He will have to have a yacht race next year between my new lesabre and the riv. :Dou: We have a local guy who can make your seat covers for you. He is realistic in his prices, and does great work. He is in Waconda, not too far away. Let me know if you want his info. Later Tony
