hoping you can help me out with this one...just picked up a sweet 68 skylark convertible with a 350 and 4bbl with the 2 speed auto. ran the numbers and found out that it has a 1970 350 in it now with the Q-jet. the problem is that when you first start the car it idles fine for about 10 seconds after which the idle falls and it proceeds to idle very poorly. the engine misses and threatens to stall. this is with the car in park. when gas is added to counteract the drop in RPM the car misses. it also does this in gear, though if floored it will cough and sputter and then goooo. after doing this a couple of times the engine usually straightens out and then is fine for the duration of the drive with an occasional, very minor stutter. this was happening when i bought the car but i replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and battery and inline fuel filter. still think its electrical but i am stumped. it could be my points which i have put off changing for lack of a tach/dwell meter. i know the post is long but if you could giveme some guidance i would greatly appreciate it.

My guess would be that it may be time to put a new kit in the old Quadrajet, or have someone overhaul the carb for you if you have never done one and don't want to chance it. The Qjet can be rather finicky, but I think is the best carb there is for our stock machines.
