I recently purchased a 68 400. My question involves the air cleaner for the car. What is the correct air cleaner? What other models have the same part? Pictures would be helpful if available. Your help is appreciated. Patrick
'68 GS 400 Air Cleaner Your car should have a steel, single snorkle air cleaner with a solid steel heat riser tube that comes from the driver's side exhaust manifold and enters the bottom of the snorkle. The lid should be chrome with no decals on it. This picture also shows a ram air conversion off the back of the air cleaner, but the basic air cleaner configuration is correct. I think the "big car" models with 430 engines had similar units for 1968 except for the chrome lid. The chrome lid is available as a reproduction (not an exact match, but very close.)
John, Thank you for the illustration and information. I will begin my search for the correct air cleaner. Patrick
I'm pretty sure the 68 Big cars have a thin snorkel. I took mine (the base) off of a 1971 Riv and used a new repro GTO chrome lid. I think 68-69 non RA GTO's may use the same base? Not sure about 400 Sportwagons (I guess I'll look at mine when I get home). This one is a 60's 430 which is the wrong, narrow snorkel http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7911611876 This one is a close match that may work for you, but the snorkel is the wrong length. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7913065770 This one is a 71 Riv one which is very close http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7910583930
Tim, Thank you for the additional information (very helpful). Please let me know any other results you may determine. Patrick
My 69 400 Sportwagon has a narrow snorkel. They're out there and you can spend $20-$200 depending on how correct and nice you want it to be.
Oh, another note is that many bases look the same, but pay attention to which way the snorkel faces when on the carb. On the mouth where it sits on the carb, there is a section that protrudes which serves as a guide. That guide is at the back of the carb and prevents the cleaner from spinning. If it's in the wrong place, the snorkel will point the wrong way.
