since we are in the mood of 68 chevy IIs I thought I should start this thread and ask if anyone knows about this car I just found on ebay, its an L-79 4spd car, and something about the purestocks was mentioned, so I thought I'd ask http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chev...ategoryZ6172QQihZ014QQitemZ330046923725QQrdZ1
I saw the car in person a few weeks ago. The next owner needs to be very rich (in order to pay someone to do the restoration), or have very good metal working & welding skills. It's a rough one. We let this one pass.
I am not sure if these were built. I've never seen one before, and although I have seen suggestions they exist, I am not sure. The L79 is a strange engine post-1966.
There are 2 at my Dad's house right now. There were 1294 built in 1968 Novas, not really rare but just overlooked since they were not Super Sports. Most people have probably seen one but just never noticed it.
Diego, they are for real. I had one and you're right, they're wierd. How about it had a cast iron intake and a q-jet. Not quite the same image they had a few years earlier.
I had (way back when) a triple black, numbers match, '68 L79 327-325hp 4 speed Chevelle. Ran awesome. JH
Any difference between a '66 L79 Nova and a '67 L79 Nova, other than the brakes? Why did they change the formula for the '68 L79?
in '68 they went with a different intake and a 625cfm AFB style (?) Carter, and it was derated to 325hp from 350hp in 66-67, the 66-67 350hp had a 585cfm Holley carb. Mine was born with a 327-325hp L79 with the heavy duty clutch option, bucket seat, M20 4 speed, 3.73 12 bolt, and rollup dash tach. I loved that car... until it was stolen one night, and I never saw it again. Mine had 15" Cragars all around, black/black, no vinyl roof, custom chrome trim group, am-fm w/stereo, buckets w/no console, really gorgeous car, ran like a raped ape with a General Kinetics cam, 4.56s, Edel. intake, headers, 780 Holley, turbo Corvair mufflers... :3gears: JH
Back in '66 my neighbor had a brand new Nova with the L79 and a 4 speed. Yellow with a black interior. That car was one of the fastest cars I have ever been in, and I have ridden in or drove almost every musclecar made. :TU: That car would take almost anything on the street at the time. Bill Jenkins ran one, and beat a lot of Hemis with it.
know alittle bout 68 novas i currently own (2) 68 396 novas.one I have owned 1 of them since1979.As for the 327/325 hp 68 nova ;they are pretty rare;not sure why they were not offered with the the holley or L-79 aluminum intake.I can only assume ;because 68 was the introduction of the 396 in a nova.Had a 327;and had thought about a pure stocker;but another guy I know had a similar combo ,and the dyno # were horrible.chris
the numbers dont mean anything, its just for a good time, alot of people dont realize that the 68s are so unusual, that is what I have been noticing since my uncle got his, but still it would be cook to see more 68s out at the track, being it out and I will be drolling
Chevrolet decided they had a winning formula of style and performance and little was changed on the 1967 Nova. There were small changes, such as a modified grille and new seat cover patterns, but it was basically the same as the 1966. Front disc brakes could now be ordered from the factory. The big news was the L79 engine was no longer available with the Nova, although a few Nova SS models did manage to be outfitted with the power-plant.
New Vette came out in 68 also. Chev Engineering threw a hissy fit in Central office right about the time those cars were being finalized in production for the 68 model year. Corporate directive was to start shifting toward emissions development (hence the turnpike cruiser 67 442's, and the 68 G block at Olds) The infamous "no multiple carbs in GM" edict came out at that time. (Except for the Corvette, of course, ahem, ahem). BOP divisions were very pissed. Sign of things to come as GM started to centralize and flex their bureaucratic bloat in the tech center. How's that one? On a tear today!   Right after 421 HO big pontiacs, 66 L79 Nova SS Ht's are at the top of my favorite car list....even above the Oldsmobiles!
I am having a brain fart, has abyone brought a 66 or 67 nova?or is anybody planning on it for the near future?
My dad restored a '68 Chevelle 300, L79 4-speed, that he finished in 2004. I had hoped the owner would take it to the PSMCDR but he sold it before it got the chance. It 100% stock except it was bored .030". He is now restoring a '68 L79 Nova for the same guy so maybe we can see an '68 L79 at the track in 2008. This Chevelle has been through a couple of owners in the last 2 years and someone forwarded us a link recently showing that it was for sale again at a dealer. Here's a link if anyone is interested. http://www.classiccarsinc.com/current/1968 Chevelle L79.htm It looks like it has been driven about 700 miles since the restoration and someone also changed the steering wheel (which looks totally out of place on this car!)
68 nova Hey,I agree Shawn;its mostly about having a good time;their is the chevelle 300 deluxe that runs pure stock ;and it seems to run good.I still have the 327 complete with intake, carb and exhaust manifolds. It would be neat to see a 66 or 67 chevy2 at the pure stock drags.does anybody out their know if their has ever been a 66 or 67 chevy2at one of the races?chris
This car was at the Mecum auction here last month. I think that it's future purpose will to be passed from one flipper to another..... :boring: Also, auctions seem to be a good place to dump bogus cars on people that will not have time to do the necessary research.....
