68 Skylark floor Molded carpet info

Hi guys ! I'm lookoing to replace the molded carpet on the interior of my Skylark Custom (68) 2 doors automatic w/floor console . My interior is Buskin beige and I have the "deluxe interior" . I replace the seats cover couple weeks ago ... next spring I'll be looking for the carpet

Beside the seats , door panel , seat belts anchor , console , what else should I took off to achieve this ? (ie:kick panel) ?

Any prefered material ? Loop , nylon , heat shield , mass backing ?? What should I be looking for , not that I want the top of the line , just something in between with good looking for years to come !

    Thank You

What i can see is that they are made in 2 parts (front and rear)

The rear ones should be easy to install , what about the front one , in reason of console , pedal , kick panel etc ...

Many different company make them ?

    Thank you

Don't worry....it's not that complicated in terms of "quality". Basically, only two places "make" the carpet sets for your car....Auto Custom Carpets and Trim Parts. And....they both source the carpet that they mold into the sets from the same mill/manufacturer so it's a toss up as you'll likely get exactly the same thing from either place.

With that said and assuming you like the factory look you should get the rayon/nylon loop carpet set. I think they may refer to it as "Raylon" now.

If you contact a decent repro parts seller they may be able to send you some color samples/swatches if you are trying to match up a color with what you have or any decent Buick supplier will probably know what is correct for your car/color combo.

As far as a backing.....the usual carpet sets will already have a grey jute glued to the backside. After that it's up to you.....the discussions about sound deadening/heat barriers/etc. can go on FOREVER as everyone has their favorites. You can make the inside of your car look like the Lunar Space Capsule if you like before installing the carpet with all the reflective sound deadeners, etc but you need to ask yourself...WHY??? Do you want a Lexus??? Is there a lot of extra heat under your car from headers being installed? It has a cool V8 motor in it so why not "hear it" some when you are driving it??

    Hi Donald
I’m installing carpet in my 68 GS 400 convertible today. I purchased my carpet off eBay it’s an Auto Custom Carpet dealer & they have ACC ship directly to you (eBay item # 200831624686). Chuck in sales is very helpful & will ship you samples; at $144.00 shipped I found that to be the best deal.

I used a heat/sound deadener I purchased from Home Depot # 30000-11424 ($60.00 If you can buy a 12ft roll you should have enough) it comes 48” wide & I cut 2 pieces 65” long & trimmed it to fit. I overlapped it just like the carpet goes & cut it so where the seats bolt in it wasn’t doubled.

The heat/sound deadener has an aluminum backing; I was worried about condensation creating a rust problem on the floor, so before I installed it I painted the floor with por-15.

My kick panel vents go deep into the fender well, the passenger side I had to remove the glove box to get the kick panel out, I left the driver side in & maneuvered around it.

This information is from research I gathered from this site & others before tackling my interior. I’m not saying this is the best way to do this, its just the way I felt would be the most cost effective way to achieve what I was trying to do (too much heat coming through floor & hear my radio better). I don’t know if it has worked because I don’t have my interior back yet. I’m changing from all blue to all white.

I attached a couple of pic for you. Good luck

Hope this helps if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Thank you so very much for those info !

I don't knew the carpet goes all the way Under the console !

Is the carpet pre-drill for the holes (bucket seat , seat belt , hi-beam etc)

I don't think the carpet will be in this year , most probably spring/summer 2014 ... as my car going for paint in couple of weeks !!

I put brand new seat cover (PUI) this summer , the carpet will finish up for the interior for now , door panel would have to wait as I won't be able to do everything at the same time

    Thank you

The carpet is not precut. What I did was as small of a hole as I could for the shifter then opened it up more & more. Tried to get it as high as possible up the firewall/under dash then worked from the middle out, secured it on 1 side then pulled tight as possible then cut high beam hole trimmed & secured that side. When I was happy with that I cut the holes for my seats last.

    Ill post some pictures tomorrow

Here’s a pic finished. Try to pay attention to how your mat under the gas pedal is aligned. I had gone on the internet to see what was exact & there are some bad placements out there, so I tried to get it off memory as best I could.

    Good luck

    Thank you so much !

Were you able to proceed with the kick panel in place ? That is one of my concern as they are not so easy to remove

I did do it with the driver kick panel still there, but I wished I had taken it out would have been a lot easier.

I have to do it in the next week or so . Post some pictures after too !

I've only seen the front on top. Install the back first.

That's the way my 68 is, install the back first and overlap the front over it. The front should have seam binding on it at the back. Thanks.

That's what I had in mind at first !

I asked the question here before never saw the rear on top either on youtube .... but that make sense with the "seam" visible on top it make a nicer finishing touch .

So you guys confirm it goes that way ?
