Gotta love the "mysteriousness" of the 69 Stage. I have yet to ever hear of a 430 stage1 existing though....or is it inferring there's just 430 parts available on the 400 maybe??

    Great documentation Alan.

Two years ago, I bought a 69 GS STAGE- 1 hdtp with all the over the counter STAGE -2 equipment in it and on it including the original 10 bolt rear housing with a 4.78 cone type posi. The engine was infact a 430 with the factory flat top notched pistons. I tried to research this car but no luck, so I now have a 70 Yellow GSX Stage -2 with the orig 4 spd. It has all the power you would ever want, but not as fast as my wagon WAS !

Bill - thats very interesting. I think I remember seeing that car listed in Hemmings ??

Do you still have the block ?? It would be interesting to see what parts it has as compared to the list up top !!

You say it was a 430....was it originally or punched out to it ??

    Hi Alan
    The block was a 430 block,not a 400 punched.
I'm positive it had the STG 2 cam but I could not see the 2 grooves that indicate STG 2 cam.
The short block stayed with the car when I sold it sporting regular heads and cast iron intake. It went to Philly to a 69 guy named NICK. HE also has 2 '69 Stage 1 convs, one 4 spd and one auto, nice stable!
The GS was originally triple white, body, interior and V top.
He called to tell me that it is running again and he plans on redoing the car original.
Take care, didn't see ya at Cecil

    Ah hah!

Now this is some cool stuff here! Thanks for sharing the info guys.

I didn't think to much about the old nasty Stage 2 stickered chrome valve covers I bought from a guy many moons ago, but now that this is all brought up I think I might go back hunting for what was under the valve covers and maybe the short block:Brow:

    Hmmmmmmmmmm.....

    Anyhow thanks gents, good reading:TU:

Mark, if you don't mind, I'd like to glean that photo of part numbers for my page.

And Alan, I won't even ask you. I'm just taking that photo of the pistons.:moonu:

    Jeff,
I sent you the actual scan file which is larger than the posted pic. I got your email from your website.
Let me know if you don't receive it.

The car that first inspired me to buicks was a friend in High School he and his dad bought a 69 Stage 1 Convert at the big auction in Hershey, PA, they got the car for a steal ($2500) because it had a slight rod knock. They got hold of the original owner and got all his original paperwork, it showed the car was "special dealer equipped 430 stage 1". When they pulled the motor down to fix the rod problem they found all the stage components were installed, the block was cast 430 on the back, no vin on the block though.
Unfortunately the house they lived in burnt to the ground and the car was a total loss:ball:
