Would anyone with an unrestored 69 Skylark/GS etc help me answer this question?

On the rear quarter panels, behind the rear tire, should the panel have a continuous smooth curve top to bottom or should there be a high area running horizontally just about through the side marker light.

I put a flexible yard stick vertically on my car and discovered the drivers side touched the yard stick almost continually, from the top welt to the area where the 1/4 panel kicks in at the bottom. But this 1/4 panel has had work done a long time ago. On the passengers side it seems the yardstick hit the top welt, the middle high line and the bottom but the panels did not hit the yardstick inbetween. I'd say the panel was curved in these areas, but more flat, especially the area below the middle high line. But this panel also has some dents.

I'm just wondering which shape is correct?

    Thanks for your help.
