69' Banshee Build

I've been debating on where to post this build and decided to put it here because I assume this is where I will have the most questions regarding the build. I know the last thing anyone will want to read about is another Twin Turbo 350 build, so sorry.

I am starting out with my 1969 Buick Skylark Custom that was cloned to a GS. This was my first car when I turned 16, and manual drum brakes and a heavy foot resulted in a new passenger fender and original GS hood (front of car met tow truck bumper). As you can see, the car is a bit confused at the moment. It has the body holes for all the trim, but the trim is not on the car. It also has a 68 driver side fender and headlight bezel.

I have decided to name the car the "Banshee". A twin turbo car needs to have a good name. Banshee because it is going to be painted satin black and it will scream with the twins.

Here are a few pics of what the car started out as....

The car is solid and deserves to get an identity. I am planning on finishing the conversion to a GS. I also am getting rid of all the trim on the car and shave the door handles and antenna. I want it to look smooth and mean. I am going to paint the bumpers body color and what minimal chrome trim (windshield, rear glass) I am going to brush.

First step, weld up body holes and shave handles and antenna....

While the body does not have rust, it does have a lot smaller dents. I used a body hammer to knock out as much of the dents as I could and then used a body glaze and sanding block to smooth it out. Then it was primer time.

I have decided to change the paint color from satin black to a gunmetal metallic. I tried two different satin blacks. The first was too glossy and the second didn't flow smooth enough. I realized how skilled of a painter you need to be to spray satin. I am good at wet sanding and buffing and can make a gloss look like it is wet though. Hopefully in another two weeks I will have the new paint sprayed and then can start on the turbo build. I am getting antsy to rip the engine apart and start grinding away with some carbide burrs.

Still waiting to finish the paint. The weather was cooler and I was out of town for a bit. Hoping to finish it this weekend and then it will be time to rip into the engine.

Oooh yeah, the gunmetal will be sweet! I was bummed when I read satin black. What a cool looking car. Sure you don't wanna just slap the turbos on a runner? Seems like everyone tears into the engine which just isn't needed for low boost. :( Git-r-done! :)

    Mark,

You don't think that I need to do any gasket matching or opening up of the heads at all? I just assumed I would want to open it up a little to help the extra air get moved through. I don't see myself running more than 6-8psi on this engine.

Not to answer for Mark, but in my opinion there is no need to gasket match or open up the heads. Unless you are going to pay to have the heads professionally ported I would not go to the trouble of removing them. Keep in mind that any increase in the size of the port decreases the velocity of the air/fuel. We gain air flow due to density of the air under pressure...

What about the face of the intake? I am going to use a stock 4 barrel intake with a 1 inch spacer adapter for the Quick Fuel Carb. The spacer has an open spacer and a 4 hole spacer. With the open spacer it seems like it would just be hitting the face of the intake and causing a bunch of turbulence. The 4 hole spacer tries to mate the holes of the spreadbore with square bore, but to me it seems it ends up restricting the primaries then. I was thinking about opening up the face of the intake. so i could use the open spacer. I was going to leave a center divider and extend it to the base fo the carb. Any thoughts on this anyone?

Sure, take off the intake, set your spacer on there and blend what you need to. Set our carb on the spacer and have a look, maybe the spacer needs to be slightly blended as well.

It might be a good idea to use a TA intake if you have the money... This will work better with the square bore carb VS stock.

Yep, what Sean said. I have personally always maintained a belief that gasket matching is a waste of time. Unless the entire runner is shaped to blend with it, and it is for a high rpm only application. It KILLS low end throttle response. Port matching on the other hand can be beneficial, but does not necessarily involve removing much, if any material. If your heads have not been milled, and you're running a stock intake, just run the stock valley pan gasket and it should be fine. I would hog out the center of the intake like Sean says, and if anything toss in a mild cam upgrade while the intake is off.
