i have a 69 skylark custom.i think it has all the chrome on it you could get.ive noticed that some 69 skylarks mostly gs versions have no side chrome.so i was wondering if i decide to go without the side chrome.what do i do with the little trim studs along the side?can i grind them off or do they have to be ground drilled then welded up?..........Dave

Yeah, that body side trim (Stainless Steel) came on Skylark Custom models. Not an option on a GS, though 69 GS may have a stripe in the same location. My 68 was restored with a 69 Custom donor, and all the 69 trim ended up on the 68. Owner chose to transplant all the trim, drilling some new holes, instead of filling holes on some 69 sheet metal that was transplanted to the 68.

I had a '68 GS coupe that I replaced the doors and fenders with rust free skylark parts and I just ground he studs off and sanded them smooth. Worked OK for me.

Here is that car after it was painted... I miss this car :(

GS Trim on the sides or not?

    Hi,
You could get a GS with trim on the sides. This thread was helpful with my mystery:

GS Trim on the sides or not?

    Hope this helps! :TU:

There has still been no real proof that '68/'69 cars came from the factory with the side trim. I have a very large collection of '68/'69 factory information and it does not list the side trim as an option anywhere. The only real proof that will convince me would be some sort of factory info like a window sticker, build sheet, order form, etc... Now saying that, anything was possible back then so someone may have been able to special order a GS with that trim :Do No: It was not a "regular" factory option on the GS.

I agree with Mike here. While it is certainly a possibility that you could have special ordered the trim on a GS, it is not listed anywhere as an option from the factory on 68/69 GS models. No one with a 68/69 GS with the Stainless side trim has shown us their buildsheet or an order form to support a claim of coming from the factory. I'm not saying no one's did, just that we haven't seen supporting documents. I'd love to say mine came from the factory, but I know better. The original owner even told me there was no trim like that when they bought it.

    Ye' of little faith.

I never said it was a regular factory option. I guess to me it is not that big a deal. If some of these old guys say they had trim on their GS's it is good enough for me. What do I know?

I am not looking for "proof" or "disproof". I consider the other thread, "just interesting reading". I do not want to be an expert.

    I take it back.
I need a lawyers disclaimer at the end of my posts.

Tom, we're not trying to make too big of a deal over this trim stuff. Depending on the situation though, it can be a big deal. Many people will look at things like this to determine if a car is real or maybe a clone. I inquired with the BCA about entering my 68 in the "Driven" category for next year's meet in Rochester MN, and was told it would be DQ'd because of the stainless body-side trim, since it is not listed as a factory option for a GS. There are 2 or 3 other items that would DQ my car also, but the trim is the one I'm not prepared to address. The others I could if I chose to.

I could probably enter it to be judged instead, but I'm just not interested in that. Guess it will be a Display Only entry.

:Dou: :Do No: Sorry, just stating the information that I do know. I hope to get to the bottom of this "side trim" mystery myself  I really did not get any solid info from that other post that would sway my current opinion.

As I stated, anything was possible from the factory back then

I filled all my holes, and then skim coat of bondo over entire set of holes,
1 panel at a time! Blocked it and Voila!! No more trim!
still can't think of a color....this is harder than thinking up a name for your kid!
