Hey Mike ! Where ya been lately ?

I believe that it depends on the body color of the car itself. I'm pretty sure that Pontiac only used certain colors for their steel wheels.

For example: Dan's T-37 is Canyon Copper. However, his steel wheels are a brownish color, not copper. So it is a color that "goes" with the color of the car.

I let my buddy Rick jump his Hemi Road Runner in front of mine and it's done now. They will be getting back on mine in a week or two. The body work was almost done. Getting close to blocking it. That is Ricks 440+6 Runner on the cover of the new Musclcar magazine. For any of you guys that saw his yellow Bird in person....His new RUnner is WAYYYY! STRAIGHTER! Our body guys are doing AWSOME WORK!!! It'll be worth the wait. FYI..His 68 Hemi Runner is Silver with a Blue intrerior :beer

My T-37 came with a really dark green metalic on a silver car. Go figure. :Do No: Of course it came out of the Freemont plant and who knows what they were smoking then.

Put the car in primer grey.
Then run some old craigger SS or MT 5 spoke chrom mag rims with the blue center caps. WIth a set of fat MT tires with the "not legal for street use" grinded off.

    classic........

    Body color wheels

    Mike:

Policy at Olds back then was all plain steel wheels were black except those with dog dish type small hubcaps. In that case they were painted the main lower body color. Wheels were all received in black and didn't get painted unless they had to be. 90% had full wheel covers and whitewall tires and they always had black wheels.

I would guess that the other GM home plants did likewiase, who knows what the BOP and GMAD plants did. Probably whatever they felt like that day.

FWIW Mike, I recall Jim Mino's '68 R/A II Firebird had the steel rims painted the same copper colour as the body. That was two years ago at the 2003 event -- any chance there's a photo of the car from that event posted on a site somewhere?

Both black and some body colors

Some colors were available and some where not. I have a listing somewhere around here that lists which colors were available but at this moment I'm having a hard time actually putting my hands on it. The reason I know I have it is because I looked up this very question when trying to decide if I should run poverty caps on my '69 GTO but my color (code 40, or code Y, Mayfair Maize, same as Chevy Butternut Yellow) was not available as a wheel color and to be correct I would have to have painted my wheels black  . If someone else doesn't chime in with the list I will dip it up by tomorrow. As I remember only a handful of the colors were available.

In the Lansing built cars, Olds offerred all A body colors on the plain steel wheels and the N67 SSII wheel option starting in 1971 (prior to that all SSII were known as N66 and were were metallic grey. In 1970 the Rallye 350 and the Indy Pace cars were the first to get body colored SSII wheels. B and C cars did not get dog dish hubcaps and were all black (as received from Motor Wheel).

At Chevy, the steel wheels arrived all black, and then the front-side got body color...the spare got sprayed body color as well, but also only the front-side, and it was installed face down (black backside showing). Our '69 Yenko Nova was a LeMans blue car originally, and came with LeMans blue colored steel wheels. While this is generally the norm...

...there is also the exception to the rule. I know of a '69 L78 Nova, Olympic Gold, Dana Chevrolet, that arrived with black steel wheels, per the original owner's request. This is a 2 owner car, that was with the original owner until about 4 years ago and has since been restored...

Just got home from going to get the info at my Dad's shop but it looks like I'm too late. In case you are curious anyway... According to the chart I have body colored wheels were only available with the following 1969 Pontiac colors:

Starlight Black (code 10 or A)
Antique Gold (code 65 or G)
Limelight Green (code 59 or H)
Crystal Turquoise (code 55 or K)
Warwick Blue (code 53 or D)

It appears that all other colors would have only been available with black rims (except Rally IIs of course).

Regardless of correctness or not I prefer body colored rims on all cars (except white). Our '67 is not one of the 4 colors available in '67 with body colored rims but we painted them Burgundy anyway because we thought it looked so much better than black. We love poverty caps on Pontiacs!

Gary: do you have a letter or something you're taking your info from? If so, could I bum a copy? While I deal mainly in Chevys, your info would be good to file away! :beer

    69 Pontiac paint codes

Here is a scan of the paint list I have for '69 Pontiacs. It is a little blurry since i had to shrink it down to post it. Send me your email address and I will send you the larger version that is much clearer.

If you want them I also have 64-70 that I can also scan and send to you.

    Love those poverty caps 1

Mike when the '69 Firebird is complete, post some pictures. 2 of our 3 GTOs have steel wheels and poverty caps, so I'd love to see your car. Here's my Dad's GTO (the car I rode home from the hospital in after being born). Rims are bdy colored (Marina Turquoise)
