Hi folks, I managed to shear off the bolt head to the choke assembly/coil in the intake manifold. I’ve already broken one screw extractor off in the damn bolt. Any recommendations before I go down the welding route? Is that choke coil/assembly necessary (original, restored QJet) or is there a way I can omit it and/or go around using it? Thanks!! Lucas
Center punch it. Take a small drill and drill as close to center as possible. Don't worry if you off. Get the next larger bit and make the hole bigger. If you were off center with thr pilot hole just correct it with the larger bit. When you get close to the edge of the hole, take a small chisel and try and collapse the bolt into itself. It will usually come loose in thr hole at that point. If you did it right, you'll save all the original threads
If you don't want to drill it out and you're not concerned about OEM you can add an electric choke from Ken at Everyday Performance, it mounts to the side of the carb instead. Just an option.
What if I were to just bypass/not install the choke coil/assembly all together? Would I have more issues other than difficulty with cold starts??
Those little 1/4” thread bolts break 90% of the time. The only luck I’ve had with extracting them is drilling them out. They just get destroyed with heat and rust over 50 years
Correct. The only issue you'll have is on cold startup you'll just need to keep your foot on the gas and keep it around 1500 rpm for a few minutes until it starts to warm up. That's what I do as I don't have a choke installed as of yet. I do have an electrical one from Ken ready to go on though in the near future.
You will also have to make sure the choke plate is FULLY OPENED or the secondaries will not open properly . Drill it out and fix it properly . Its a 1/4 -20 bolt . Even if you go too large with a drill you can always make it 5/16-18 bolt size
After snapping off another extraction tool I think I’ve drilled out most of the damn bolt anyways. Will keep at it and see it through, I’m determined now!
Unless the fastener isn’t bonded to the threads. Those extractors are only good for certain applications
It may be too late now BUT one of the things I do is to heat the area with a propane torch. Not red hot just hot. Take a candle & let it melt. Walk away until it's cooled. Many times/normally the bolt will come out. As the candle wax cools it's wicking it's way down the threads. Works best on pipe plugs in engine blocks for the oil passages.. Tom T.
