'69 Syklark not charging

  1. Hey guys, I'm still new but I was hoping someone could help with an electrical problem I'm having. I have a 1969 Skylark with a 350 that I assume is not getting a charge while driving and I'm trying to figure out what the problem is. It all started a couple weeks ago when I was driving and the car just died, all my lights when out as well so I assumed it was the alternator so i jumped the battery with my truck just to get it home and it started but only ran for a couple minutes. Well I just switched out the alternator and the car will still only run for maybe a minute on it's own without the help of jumper cables. I take off the jumper cables and the car runs fine and then just dies along with everything else electrical. I just don't know what else could be the problem in the charging system. I've heard maybe the voltage regulator but I'm not sure how to check that...any ideas on what I can do?

Sounds like a shorted battery, but check wires at reg and bat connections. No matter what you do you will need a good or fully charged battery to start making a good test, so start there. You may want to have the battery tested.
