Need a steering intermediate shaft from '70-'72 455 GS (different from 350). It's the one with the bolt on flange. See link for pics. http://www.buickperformance.com/BBBshaft.htm Thanks, Donny
Joe the diffrence is that the intermiate shaft for a BBB has a press on end (piece that bolts to the rag joint/steering box) It is retained on the shaft by a bolt this piece is made from a cast material (iron I think) The Small block intemidiate shaft has a stamped steel end it is retained by crimps on the end of the shaft and had no bolt to retain it to the shaft. It is a big visual diffrence between the two. :beer
The other big block A-bodies did not use these either--at least Oldsmobile did not I am 100% sure of. Buick only piece(regardless of what the link says). Patton
Patton, I hate to tell you this, but the Olds and Chevy big block cars also came with them. My 1970 442 big block convertible and my friends 68 and 70 Chevelle SS 396 cars are 3 examples that have them. This is one of the ways we catch guys that added the tilt wheel option to their cars. Most poeple don't know the difference and change the entire column. Duane
Not all Olds big block A-bodies came with them then--I have original 1970 examples without these so it may be more random on the Olds's. Will look at an assembly manual tonight also. Thnx, Patton
Ok so what's the deal? Do I have to have a big block intermediate shaft in order for my car to work with a 455, or is it more for the reason of "correctness"?
Hey Allen, No offense, but if you need a steering shaft too, how about starting your own thread? I already PM'd Phil and he has decided to keep his. Donny
