Nice looking car! Question: The rear defrost is set to the left (drivers) side of the package tray. I thought the defrost would be set in the center. Which position is correct?
This car appears to be an early build car. From my recollection of Duane's explanation in the past, there were two different rear defroster designs used in '70 Skylarks & GS's and the changeover was made earlier than the "halfway" production mark. The earliest rear defrosters were carry-over designs from '69 and had a very long/narrow grille which was (I have a complete NOS early set-up I need to get rid of) centered on the rear package tray whereas the later design is the one you see pictured in the ad for the car in this thread (rectangle grille w/ one radiused corner) was moved to the driver side and the grate was metal. The interesting part about this car being such a relatively early build date (3rd week of Sept. for the body, if I read the info correctly) and if the defroster set-up as viewed is original to this car, then the early design was used on the very earliest cars (few months?) ... or dealer added, of course. I have talked with him. Tried to buy the car also. It is as nice as it shows in the pictures and Lee Smith is one of the nicest dealers you will ever find. Family guy who loves cars. We are going to Kissimmee today for Mecum to add to the collection .
:TU: That defroster grill looks correct. I've never seen a 70 early or late with the defroster grill mounted anywhere except on the LH side. Perhaps someone smarter will chime in here and educate me?:TU: Very nice GS in an unusual color combo... :TU:
The Black 70 W-30 conv was bought by Troy Thornton and frame up restored. Odd color. Black with white interior and gold stripes. This car came from Dave Christinoff collection and has very little history but appears to be a real car. Troy paid 85 plus commision for it so it will be interesting to see what it brings on Sat. Red tri power 66 4speed conv also going on Sat. I will be bidding on these cars if they are reasonable.
Why is he selling so soon, or is this what he does, buy & sell? Yes, odd color combo but part of that Otis Chandler collection before Christenoff if than carries any weight?? Good luck on the 66, at least the weather will be warmer there.
What do you think the 66 4 speed conv tri power is worth? I know a guy that has one he wants to restore.
Funny.....all the package trays I have seen.....the rear defroster pictured....goes in the middle......the side have holes/cut-outs for speakers....someone goofed somewhere.....o No:
Hi George, I thought the same thing, defrost in the middle and speakers on the sides. I have a new package tray and correct rear defrost that I plan to install some day and when I do I want it in the correct position.....
I must have gone through hundreds of 68-72 Skylarks and other GM A-bodies...never seen the rear defrost off to one side. So I am going to say I am 100% confident someone made an error.....either the factory if this is an un-touched car.....or someone at the resto shop goofed.
George, it is in the correct location, I've seen a bunch that way. If it was a rear speaker car the speaker was on the right side and the defroster was still on the left. I have seen several 70-72 cars with the thin defroster mounted in the middle, I took one out of a 71 4 door in the yard for my 68 Skylark
Very nice car but what's up with the crooked armrest? I know the factory wasn't perfect but that's pretty bad.
The 66 should break 50k if it is nice as he says. I just sold one with A/C for low 50's. The Black car is being resold by a restorer. I am sure he will want 125-150 but the market may set the price. I don't expect it to do that at this time.
So that's it...the location of the defroster depends on the speaker option. Thanks for that info.:TU:
