You want to make sure you have the correct ride height. This will be also contribute to front tire rub with 15x7 Rallye wheels no matter the year, if the the ride front height is too low. Ron
Spoke to Duane this morning on this subject. He agree's that it was a mid-year 1970 model year change, but probably later than the pointy lenses, clear top, etc changes. What also comes into play is the workers probable lack of rotating the stock (FIFO vs. LIFO for you accounting types), which would cause some of the later 1970 model years to have the plain moldings even though an earlier car may have the scalloped moldings or, as even pointed out above, one side has scallops and the other has the plain moldings. Like I said, they weren't building show cars. Judges should not remove any points for a 1970 model year with either style. Now 1971-72 you better have the proper moldings.
Interesting - I didn't realize the G60-15's weren't available @ the beginning of the model year. Probably why my 10E bodied Stage 1 4-sp. wasn't ordered w/them.
I should have posted this bulletin first since it is earlier (Aug 29, '69) but this memo stated that the big wheels and tires would be available for production in October. Then the later bulletin pushed the production date to 11/3/69.
My 03A built 1970 GSX Stage 1 4 speed ,original paint, 52K mile car ,off the road since 1975, untouched car, does NOT have scalloped front wheel well moldings.
I’ve never thought to check my car until just now. It was built 04A and is an original unrestored car, original paint, and WG 15x7 wheels. It also does NOT have scalloped front wheel well moldings.
I have finally got my car documented. It is number 401 and it was invoiced 4/29/70. And the body code is 04D Some clarification the tire actually hits the top bolt that secures the inner fender to the outer. The right side is the primary offender. And it does have the WG wheels on it
Just so this is clear... On early cars, were speaking of those built prior to mid December, 1969 (maybe up to Mid January, 1970), they should have NON SCALLOPED moldings, correct? Cars built after mid January, 1970, should have scalloped moldings, correct? Of course, we cannot say "never", as different plants used different stock, etc.
No, that has been shown to not be the case. Original, unrestored cars with 15x7 wheels that were built well into April 1970 (and maybe later) were still being assembled with the non-scalloped moldings.
My original '70 GS455 was a 06D build and was ordered with the WG 15x7 wheels and the GO60-15 Goodyear Polyglas tires and it has the non-scalloped moldings. It was a Leeds built car, so perhaps GM plants did things a bit different than Flint, but I also thought that the bodies came pretty complete from Fisher. My GSX was kinda a mess when I found it, so I can't use it as a reference, but it does have scalloped moldings on it now
My yellow car has non scalloped moldings on it. LH fender was repainted from stripe down at some point.
