HI I AM NEW TO THE V8 BOARD. I HAVE A 72 GS 455. I NOTICED THIS CAR ON EBAY AND ASKED THE GUY ABOUT THE TITLE. I SEE HE NOW POSTED ONE. WHAT IS THE WHOLE STORY ON THIS CAR? I AM INTERESTED IN THIS CAR. WHAT IS IT WORTH? HE SAID HE HAS HAD OFFERS AROUND 70+K . I HAVE WANTED A GSX MY WHOLE LIFE AND SEE THIS AS A GOOD OPPURTUNITY TO GET ONE, BUT I DON'T WANT TO BID UNTIL I KNOW A LITTLE MORE... CAN ANYONE HELP ME? HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE CAR. THANK YOU JAMES, IN

It will take more than 70k more to make this car a nice candidate to own. Look around on here in the Ebay section and possibll the bench to get more info about this car. There are also some threads about this car on the BPG forums.

The first question I would ask myself is "Am I geting the matching drivetrain?" If have not see any pics verifying these are present.

Next I would ask myself if I were to purchase the car would I send it out for a concours restoration or something less. If the answer is the former you need another 100K laying around on top of the purchase price.

You then need to ask yourself the question "Would I be better off buying a known GSX stage one 4 speed already finished?"

If you have a sufficient quanity of the Franklin Brothers you can make one appear.

Jim, I think you are on the right track with those questions. I would ask one more:

-what do you after sinking $100K in JUST resto Costs in a car that, in all honesty, will probably need a rebody or at the very least extensive metal work and panel replacement? How much of the car is left when you are done?????

Perhaps. I would say you are getting close to the value question but did not really get to home plate. The real capper qs are:

What will it be worth when I am finished and does that matter to me?
What did it really cost when all was said and done?
    Can I afford it?
Even if I can afford it do I want to invest this much time, money and effort to do it?

(Also I could see the resto costs exceed 100K. Once you touch the tar baby you are going on to the end of the dance with the costs whatever they are like it or not)

Another important cost not often mentioned is the lost opportunity cost of the total resto cost during the resto period. This is going to vary from person to person based on whether you do the work at home, own a shop that has enough down time to get employess already there on a fixed salary to work the car or whether you send it out etc. Also the money is not paid out all at once so you just have to average that into the equation.

So assume the resto period is going to be say 2 years --perhaps sooner but often longer. Further asume that 100K is the cost of parts and labor because you sent it out. On a 10% per annum assumption on what alternative investments would yield that is 20K more you have to add in. Then there are the transporatation costs from start to finish -- figure another 5K. So that is another 25K. (For me personally I would use 20% so I would have to add 45K.)

So if you bought the car at the 95K --Buy it Now --add 100K for parts and labor and then add the lost opportunity and transport cost of 25K. Now you will be in at 220K when you get to use the car fully restored. Plus there are other costs such as insurance during the interim., property taxes and so forth. Once you get honest with yourself about all the costs you are in north of 220K. Since I figure 20% for myself I would be in north of 240K. (If someone does cut corners on the car with patch panels, does not make a concours car, avoid NOS parts, do the work themselves and so forth yes they could come out for less.)

I got my X January 06 and paid alot, it's starting to look like I got it cheap. I really can't see a GSX in this condition going over $50,000. That thing isn't worth $25,000. Pat

If you have 1500 franklin brothers , I can put you in a restored 10-10 , 4speed with air that needs nothing.

Yeah, you should definitely buy it. The kids last name is Reed...and when he's not chasing his cousins around in the back 40...he gets off on jerking people around on the internet, and posting way bogus ebay auctions for cars he doesn't own, knows nothing about, and couldn't afford to own or maintain one unless someone was buying 1 chromosome short dna strands (hes got plenty of them). Go back to the sandbox Mr. Reed....and watch out for the cats...
