Marion is in Mcdowell County in the mountains on the way to Asheville.

This is a good 3 hours west of me. Mount Airy is Andy Giffith's home town and the basis for Mayberry. A couple of years ago this would have been a good deal. Somebody will buy it but I would look for another one finished. Tilt wheel on a 70 GSX is unusual. I suppose it is a non stage 1 car.

This has really ruined my weekend! Thanks a bunch!!!!! LOL Back in the late 90's my Mopar buddy called me from Bakersville, NC. He knew I loved Buicks and he found 2. They both were in SC. So we made the trip. One was a Stage 71 and the other a Yellow GSX. The Stage had a resto started and the GSX was in need of one. He decided he wanted one and gave me the choice of which one I wanted. Since I was limited on funds and the Stage was closer to being finished I took it and he took the GSX.

Dad drove the trailer and hauled my car home. My buddy and me looked the GSX over and decided it might make the trip. So, with no grill, no bumper and rotten tires we drove it up to the gas station. Quickly we had a fuel leak and had to replace the rotten hose. After a quick trip around Greenville, SC with his dealer tag on it we hit the interstate back to the mountains of NC. The car performed great especially for a car that had been sitting for over a decade!
After getting them home I started working on mine. Long story made short: when I went back to get the original Stage block for mine it wasn't there! Over the years I have proved mine to be a big block car and it does have the original Stage emissions decal on it but I will never know if it was a real Stage car. It took every extra penny of my money back then to just get it on the road and I loved working on it.
His car didn't have the trim tag. It had been drilled and removed. One repaint in a slightly different shade of yellow but a very old paint job. Slight rust around the wheels. Aftermarket dash bezel, grill and steering wheel. Non Stage motor from around 1973. The car was very solid for the age. He simply tuned it up and replaced a little metal around the rear wheel openings. This was before we had internet so we never knew how to document it.
Fast forward a year. His back was now bad and he had used up his extra cash to live one and not been able to buy cars to sale and make a living on. I had a new baby that slept 2 hours per night if that. My nerves were shot and my wallet was flat. He called me and offered the car to me before anyone else. $4k for it! This was what he paid for it and he wasn't even charging me for the work he had done to it. The last thing on my mind at the time was a car! I didn't know if I would live another year at the time because of work, no sleep because of my son's collick and all the bills taking all my money. To say I was stressed was an understatement. Reluctantly he sold the car.

Sold to a guy in Marion, NC! A guy named Darrell! Sold for $4k! The same car in this thread for almost $30k now and in worse shape than it was then!!! So........................I knew I missed out on it back then. It's been one of those stories I have told for over a decade now! So................it has really messed my weekend up! LOL
But, to make me feel a little better I just called my buddy and broke the news to him! LOL He is in worse shape than me now.

John- did that GSX have black stripes painted down the trunk lid like Chevelle?

Nope, black GSX stripes and a rear spoiler. Front bumper and air dam were gone when we bought it.

The reason I ask is that an old girlfriend of mine went down to the Carolinas to visit some family and found this car sitting behind an auto parts store in a field. Pictures teken around 1990. Sorry Jim, I dont remember if it was North or South. Im thinking North Carolina. She took pictures of them for me. Sitting next to the X was a Sherwood green Stage 1 with a white interior.

Always wondered what became of these.

That's funny! Those truck drivers on highway 5 wouldn't like that when they were trying to get over turner's grade!
    Most of the cars were Fords in the show. Except I remember this Cadillac;
(The Chauffer is Rance Howard, Ron Howard's father)
1961 Cadillac limousine from The Andy Griffith Show

Cool pic! But, this car didn't have the stripes and it had chrome Ralley wheels. The guy we bought it from fround it at the Autofair in Charlotte back in about 1996 or 1997. He bought it and brought it back to SC where it sat under a metal framed tent in his back yard.

I can tell you it was a bucket seat car. I have no interior shots though. Here are the only other two pics I have of it. The passenger side of the bumper is squished and it has a pair of aftermarket 6x9 speakers mounted in the package shelf.

Now, if you look closely at the pictures, I could swear the GSX is wearing green steel wheels. If thats the case, the wheels were swapped off the green one which would make it an original dog dish equipped car possibly:Do No:

I will check to see if my car came with Dog dish on the sloan work . I can see the 16 inch steering wheel & the rear speakers . This car is way Too close to my options & Green top . I am almost POSITIVE those speakers are in my car

The car has got to be the one I have . Someone replaced the fenders w NOS panels, 1/5 of a right 1/4, New GS grille & a dirty MACCO paint job .

I would bet on it ...That same car was Fluffed up not long after those pics were taken

How did you come across the car and how long ago did you buy it? Now we have to figure out what happened to the yellow X

Lot of money for a non numbers project. I have one in way better condition with the numbers motor I would sell for the same money, I think!:)
