I saw one of those on a '69 W-30 that was painted Chevy Rally Green. The explaination that I recieved was that it was a custom order color. Any color that was in the GM system could be painted by special order. Please correct me if I am wrong, but that was the explaination I was given. o No:
Rallye Red I think that color was available in 1970. One of my friends, Mark Lore, has an original 442. Not sure of the color code, though. I see the same bidder on this W31 as the green W30 that made it to $29,400, but didn't reach reserve. I think I may know who that is. He also has another rallye red original 1970 W31. Pretty rough, though , but does have all the documentation. Bought it from the original owner in Pennsylvania recently for $3k. Casey: Had no problem upping my agreed value on my Ramrod and my 66 442 up to $25k each with my insurance company. Just sent a coupla pics and a summary of what's been spent on them recently (scary). Haven't tried to insure the red 68 W30 yet. Hagerty's NADA link shows it to be $35k. My company, American Collectors, told me last year that they don't insure partial restorations or projects. They may change that as I believe Haggerty and Grundy do.
Casey, you could always reunite this with it's big brother http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2498264618&category=6172
On the Chevrolets, the -- paint code means it was painted a color not available on that particular model line. For example, Monaco (Hugger) Orange & Daytona Yellow was done this way on the Chevelles, as those were normally Corvette colors. It used to be thought that all colors in the GM line (from Hi-way department orange to Mary Kay Pink) *except* Cadillac colors were available on ANY model of Chevrolet via the -- paint code, BUT we recently ran across a '69 Yenko Nova with a -- paint code that was originally painted Cadillac "Firemist Nutmeg Metallic"... ----------------- Hillbilly Racing Team Confusious says: "Headers alone do not a fast car make."
Nutmeg, eh? Well at least it wasn't Rosemary Mint with essense of Lavander. The "--" paint code for Olds was also used for colors not normally listed in the order book. But, at least in 1970, the "--" was also usually present on the four "Special Order" colors offered: Rally Red, Sebring Yellow, Agean Aqua, and Nugget Gold. Each of these colors also had a 2-digit code, but for whatever reason, the Fisher Bosy tag usually was stammped "--".
Rob: I think that was standard GM process across all the car lines. BTW, thanks to your lovely wife (remind her I was the guy that was standing in a mud puddle at Norwalk when you introduced me) on the process for the Tennessee smoked ham. Also took the advice someone gave and used a coke instead of water when I baked it. Soaking it overnight in water really helped the saltiness, too. Thinking of trying that in beer. We cut it up in about 6 sections, ate 2 and froze the rest. Wife wasn't big on the taste, broke my heart. Not sure about the Fisher Body side of that, but any of the special colors on the front fenders and hood (which were painted in the Olds Paint Plant) were done off line in the repair area. They had guns for each of the standard colors hanging on the wall in the normal paint line. This was pre-robots (in the factory as well as Management and HR people). and yes, they did screw up every now and then.
very nice, but i wonder what happened to that W31 that was on a 3 day auction a while back at a buy it now of $8900?? all i can say about that car is anything red sells for more. :TU:
