    Here is a question,
Do either of you guys have the electronic dash pot instead of the mechanical one like the 70 and early 71 cars had. It mounts on the intake, and there will be what looks like a "second" emissions sticker on the radiator cover?

    And another question,
What are the letter codes and part numbers that are heat stamped into your "original" cables?

Duane, My build date is March 27th from Fisher so early April Maybe on the Buick Assembly line. My emmisions sticker is put on in such a crooked way that I do not think the electronic dashpot sticker would have fit on my radiator cover. I know you said your car had close build date. Was it just after or before mine? Maybe this was cutoff for dashpot??... DH I had Spring rings on my car for years and found them to be flawless in operation. They were repros. I liked just being able to twist off to work on car. No wrench needed. What trouble did you have?

    Duane looks like
    NEG 8904951 TL
    POS 8901066 JD

My emissons decal is also crooked and there is glue remanants of a second below it.

PS i purchased a New GM licensed restoration BF 1237195 sticker. However it is not a match for the original. Take what you can get I guess.

Dave, all the original Spring Ring I've had were well worn and hard to keep a good conection. Also seems everyone used plyers to tighten them causing gouges . On my '68 the lead actally broke in half on me once
A fresh repo set might be nice.

    Dave,
It shows that on 2-12-71 that the dash pot was removed (on Big Blocks) and the solenoids were added. When that change was actually incorporated on the assembly lines is something I cannot say. So your car may not have had one, and may have come with the early emission decal.

What is the part number and/or letter code on the sticker?

    DL,
    Your battery cable numbers/letter codes
    NEG 8904951 TL
    POS 8901066 JD
are identical to the ones off my old 71 350 GSX that was built on (06B), so they are probably original. (I bought my car from the original owner and supposedly they were never changed.)

If you end up buying new ones, do not throw the originals away. If you don't want them, throw them my way.

    You state,
"My emissons decal is also crooked and there is glue remanants of a second below it.
I purchased a New GM licensed restoration BF 1237195 sticker. However it is not a match for the original. Take what you can get I guess."

The reason is that GM changed the 71 emission decals when the dash pots were removed and the throttle solenoids were added. They also included a second decal to explain how to adjust the new solenoids.

So what you bought was an early emission decal, and not the one that you need. Not many people even know they were changed, and the repro companies only offer the early style, which is good for 2/3rds of the production year.

However, I needed/wanted the corect ones for my 71 350 GSX, so I reproduced a couple of sets for myself. The emission decal is only good for a late 350 4-bbl automatic, and the Solenoid decal is only good for automatic cars, sticks were different.

So if your car is an automatic I can give you a set. (when I find them) The key word there is give, as I cannot sell them due to licensing issues.

    DL,
My 71 (06B) car also came with a 72 style driverside inner fender and 72 style "T-3" headlights. What does yours have?

duane can you elaborate on the change in the wiring harness for the electronic solenoid.i changed my original harness because it was in bad shape and dont remember a hook up for the solenoid.did they change the harness for late cars?was the new harness basically a 72 harness?:Do No:

Licensing issues?? OOPs. My Stage-1 sticker is BG 1237198

Do your side post negative cables have the small ground to the fender? Ddi the 455's as well in 71?

    dreeesh,
I believe the 71 engine wiring harnesses remained the same throughout the entire production year. What GM did was to add a small "clip-on" harness to power the new solenoid. It clips on to the location for the TCS (Throttle Stop solonoid) and has connections to power both the TCS and the ISS (Idle Stop solonoid).

The manual versions of the ISS had a relay attached to the bracket and required another electrical connection, so that uses a different harness then the automatics.

Also all these ISS pieces are unique to the last part of the 71 model year. They are totally different from the 72 units, and I played havoc trying to find a set for my car.

"was the new harness basically a 72 harness?" I don't know if the 72 harness was the same as a 71 or if it was changed. I never had a 72 car so I never needed to check for that.

I don't think GM is interested in your selling a few decals.

71 455 side post battery cables have no "pigtail", but I believe the 72's do. I used an original one for my car.

    Aren't late 71 cars fun.

Yes, late 71's are like a red headed stepchild. Now I know even more why late 71's are so much fun.:TU: :TU: :TU: .. I may have to see if M and H can make me a negative side post with no pig tail..... Also a friend was working on a 71 June Built GS 350 recently and it also had the 72 style left inner fender.

The T-3 headlights are long gone. I will have to consult the Big fat book I just got to give you an answer on the inner fenders .

PS Dave , don't worry about the copyright . I know people, we can get you out

hey duane,ok after looking at the assembly manual i see exactly what your talking about.i have a 72 car and the wiring harness is basically the same except it has the single pink lead for the iss and the extra wire for the back of the compressor.some of the color codes are alittle different as well.i havent seen alot of those late 71 iss and harnesses around so i think i will stick with the dashpot.if i happen along on one and the price is right i may be inclined to be correct.........thanks for clearing that up for me:beer

    dreeesh,
There is one thing to remember, the brackets are specific to engine size/carb combinations, and trans types, plus the wiring harnesses are determined by trans type, as are the decals.

So if you buy a set-up for your car make sure it's for your exact engine/carb/transmission combination or you will have a problem.
    Duane

PS. I would bet that's why GM changed everything for 72.

yeah thanks duane,i did some snooping around and nobody seems to have one for sale,so ill leave the dashpot setup for now...:TU: ....probably easier to deal with

M and H will make you anything you want, prices are good too.

And just for the record, I will probably go sidepost on my 71 Stage 1 one day when (if) I go through it (build date 08/25/70). I don't like top post...those terminals are too close to the rad support IMHO (go ahead, ask me how I know!! )

Its interesting to note though that many of the latest vehicles have gone back to top post.

Strange the newer top post corrode as well.

Here is a 71-72 style NOS positve cable with 4 digit part # and two letter code. Only has red end but has plastic block and correct hooked starter end.

Yup, the burn mark is still on the rad support (hey I was 17, learned fast take the NEG cable off first...LOL) I've been hit by lightning too so little nervous about electrical stuff...

Now that being said, your last post with the cable appears to have the 4123 RC code...BUT what is up with that block? Looks wrong. And my 72 GS 455 parts car (sorry) was completely red, cable and end so figure that one out...:bla: is the 71 supposed to be the same as the 72? Diff p/n's aren't they??
