I know this is a question that I should have posted in the Sparky's Corner Section of this site, but for the sake of doing a proper restoration, I decided to post here.

My question is,on my 71 GS, the forward lamp harness is covered in the armor cable wire loom material (ribbed flexible plastic tubing) that I have seen on later GM models, and it looks original because of how long it has been there.

Is this correct for the 71 models, or did someone at some later date add this to the wiring harness? I know GM introduced this type of wire loom cover in the '70s. Should the engine harness have the same? My body build date is 03E and the blue door tag states the assembly date as 4/71, and the car was built in the Flint, MI plant.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Ken, that stuff on your wire harness is original for 71. It should run along the drivers fender well. I thing year One sells the stough or you can order a new reproduction harness that also comes with it.. My 71 GS is also an 03E car! I always thought that it should have a 4/71 door sticker as I have seen this on other late month cars. I guess Fisher Body put the Data tags on then when body was completed the door sticker went on hence the time difference. Is your car a 455 or 350? Build plant? I sent you PM to compare notes. Trying to find if your car came with sde mount battery cables.

My '71 with a 6/14 build date still has the original top mount spring ring battery cables.

DL, is it a 455? what plant is it from? Assembly manual shows side posts and change was dated 2/22/71. This just adds to the mystery. Maybe they had alot of the spring rings left laying around.

350, Flint. 25k original miles. Still has the loom on the positive cable, all clips ect. and date code on the cables. I have no question they are the original set up.

Dave, I believe it was about 1-3" down from the terminal.

My '71 Skylark has a body date code of 01C = 3rd. week of Jan./71, in Fremont CA.
Pretty sure it had not been apart before I got it. Top post battery & no sign of the plastic wire loom/armour.
Think this might have been a plant specific change?

Steve, no plastic loom on the driver side fender well? Most 71-72 I have seen in the boneyard had them

Very early car Jeff. Maybe that is it. Just shows you never can tell.

    Dave,
No plastic loom anywhere. I had bought some a couple years back but held off on the install. All the wiring on mine is wrapped in black tape, about 2" wide.

I have some pictures of an untouched 71 Stage-1 which was an March or April car and the stuff is clearly visible on this car.

Starting to think it "may" have been a plant specific item, more likely a sub-contractor item. I can see more than one plant manufacturing harnesses & shipping to factory. Are the wires wrapped in tape & then inserted in the loom?
