It could be a good find if the numbers do match and the body is not full of silly puddy. Let us know what you find out.

    more info from the owner:

numbers matching tranny too still, yes will drive just no reverse and it only shifts into 2nd. the interior has good (white) bucket seats, back seats and headliner, needs door panels and console, glass is good but it needs all door weatherstripping including the pieces that go in between back quarter glass and door glass. Engine is pretty clean, missing factory ram air air cleaner. It has fresh paint but I feel for the $4500 I spent they could have done a better job. I believe there were only like 1360 of the GS 455 with the Th400 and posi made in 71. The car hasn't been licensed since 1989. Right now I don't have any other pics and the ones I put in the ad were taken with my camera phone. If you'd like you can call me at 360-590-6996 Bob

Sitting since '89? I wonder how much of that was in a field. I'd sure like to see some photos of it before and during the paint process. But, even if it needed to be redone at this point, $7,500 ain't too bad for a numbers matching GS with almost all the parts intact.

Someone might end up with a good deal . . .

He dropped the price to $6,500. Here's what he emailed me (no photos):

"Have no pics of before paint, the car was in a shop in puyallup for about 12 yrs and then sat in a car port where I spotted it. Right now it is at my uncles property which is 20 miles from me, so no right now no pics of motor but it is not a grease pit and not a wiring mess as for the #'s matching I checked the block and the rearend still has the tag hanging off it, I never checked tranny numbers but the guy I got it from bought it from the original owner and it was bone stock except for a repaint that looked like a $99.99 Earl Sheib. I bought the car for $2500.00 put $400.00 exhaust from the manifolds back, bought a new vinyl top for $150.00, paid the guy $4500.00 for bodywork and paint I also bought new carpet (black) but I haven't seen it it may be in my uncles garage. The motor runs and sounds great. The car will still need quite a bit of work such as shocks, some chrome trim, weatherstripping, the factory air cleaner is gone as is the console. Still the car is worth every penny of $6500.00."

I'm not in the market for another car right now, but can't help think this car could at least be a decent driver, possibly a steal. Anyone?! :Do No:

Yeah, I noticed that. He's dropped it twice in a relatively short period of time.

Have you seen the car in person? I can't believe it hasn't sold yet. There must be something wrong with it. :Do No:

Someone nab it! There sure are some nice parts sitting there that are on my Skylark's aquisition list. This car is getting close to my parting-out price point and I don't really want to do that to a numbers matching GS . . . and I can't afford to restore it if it's got shady repair work. (Here I go with the rationalizing again.)

    I haven't seen it.

Sounds like there are several things wrong with it. Needs a tranny rebuild, substandard paint work that probably needs to be redone, needs a console and door panels, air cleaner, weatherstripping, shocks, probably a front end rebuild, etc. He doesn't say if the engine has been rebuilt, so I am guessing not.

I have a hard time getting to anywhere near $5,500 parting it out, but I will be the first to admit that I am not a parts guy.

Yeah, I'm just trying to add it up:
    $5,500 car
$8,000 redo body work and paint (base/clear)
    $700 console and shifter
$5,000 engine rebuild (assuming a simple rebuild)
    $800 tranny rebuild
    $500 door panels
    $400 air cleaner
    $1,000 suspension work
    $500 weather stripping
    $2,500 unseen costs
That's $24,900 (make adjustments with better estimates if needed.) Not sure what the current market value would be, but it's not within my budget.

    Or,
    $800 hood
    $100 scoop inserts
$50 tranny core and $500 engine core
    $100 fan shroud
$100 driveline (saves me having to redo mine)
$300 in all the little stuff (motor mounts, brackets, etc.)
$500 bucket seat cores for my Skylark
    $200 floor shifter steering column
    $300 front disc brakes
    Thats $2,950 of parts I want. $5,500 - 2,600 = $2,550.

    What could be sold?
    $300 /71 GS grill (if it's good)
    $200 core support
    $250 front bumper
    $250 rear bumper
    $300 posi and 3.42s
    $200 rally wheels
$300 miscellaneous stuff (radio, emblems, etc.)
That's $1,800. I could probably squeeze a little more out of it and/or get the seller under $5,500, but I want to use conservative estimates. So, it's only $750 ($2,550 - 1,800) away from my dirty hands, within a reasonable margin of error.

Honestly, I'd have a hard time doing it. I'd rather part out a 4-door full-sized car for the drive train and get a fiberglass hood. Then shop around V8Buick and Buick vendors for the other stuff . . .

If it's still around on Thanksgiving weekend, and if anyone is 'serious' then I might be able to take a closer look for someone. I'll be visiting just minutes away from where it's located.

I've seen that car on craigslist but the photo of it sitting in a field turned me off. We're talking about an area with 80 plus inches of rain a year. I expect to see rusty floors and it doesn't look like a good spot to give the floors a good looking over without being mud covered. Probably 3 or 4 inches of rain today!

Thats what I thought sitting in wet grass in Washington state has killed many a car. I would have thought moving the car to a driveway would have made it much more appealing to make the drive to check it out.:Do No:

Yeah, that wasn't a very good place to take photos of it, even if it sat inside all those years, which it probably didn't. My mind says "Go check it out, man! Make a deal!", but my gut says "Hmmm . . . something's not right."

There's a '71 Formula 400 4-speed sitting outside someone's house with a for sale sign on it about 4 blocks from me. It appears to be in all original condition, white with blue stripes and black interior. Aside from some cracking in the paint, it looks like a well-cared for vehicle. But it just sits there in the rain at $13,995. We've even had some frost this past week. :Do No:
