The plastic seat backs and bases require the adhesion promoter first. If you do not use it you will end up with a mess on your hands. I have painted many sets with the interior lacquer all came out real nice as do the kick panels. use two caots of adhesion promotor and then paint color after 10 minutes. Clean and wash the hell out of them first.

I got all the plastics off and began to assess what I needed to do to clean/prep them. Someone had used the universal chrome trim on the edges and glued them on with a glue that had ran down all over the sides and backs. Sticky is an understatement. I tried alcohol, simple green and acetone with no luck. Goo-Gone was the only thing that would take it off and it took forever. Then it left a residue and I had to use simple green to get rid of that. When I finally was able to rinse that off, there were still places that were sticky and the plastic itself felt.....soft. hard to explain. It's not a hard plastic like they used to be. I can't see wasting the promotor and the paint on this. I'll just have to buy replacements. Wanted to save money but I didn't count on the mess of the glue. :Dou:

Jerry, sounds like you have some chemical break down going on. Too bad. Ames Pontiac now sells the real good pipe edging for the seats. It is top notch. Make sure you get the better more expensive version. You still need to trim the need to trim the edges however. I used tin snips.

Back in 2000, i replaced the seat covers in my '72 gs with those from legendery, changing from sandlewood to black. I dyed the door panels and headrests with sem dye. the ribbing on the plastic back and seat sides were overglued. i removed the glue with lacquer thinner. installed new ribbing purchased from postons. it was just like original.

Yes, it seems like something changed the plastic at a molecular level. ha. Oh well. Is all the plastic the same as far as who you get it from? Lots of people offer it. I see that legendary also sells pre formed piping.
If there was a little glue on mine I could have saved it. But jeez whoever glued it must have gotten tired of the piping coming off and used a gallon....

I cannot say nay or yay for the legendary piping but the Ames stuff is as good as original and is formed. No Glue required.

Hi Dave and Jerry, just to be sure I've got this correct ... I should order PPG paint code 8892 for the headrests in a 71 GS 455 with a pearl interior? Should I order this from PPG or Tower?

Jerry, is this what you got, or did you find something else at APS Tower Paints? Whatever you got, how does it look next to the pearl upholstery? I'll also be painting the metal riser plates that attach to the rear armrests and take up the space on either side of the vertical portion of the rear seat.

    Thanks for the help guys,
    Spring is finally here!

    Hutch,
I got mine from APS but my interior is code 72 (white) not pearl. So, I can't say how the pearl will look. Mine will be almost impossible to totally match all of it perfectly. I'll let you know how mine turns out when I get more progress done. I'm still cleaning and taking apart......and ordering......

I received the pearl/parchment paint from Summit today. This is basically a clear base that adds "pearlescense" to a base color. It won't cover anything on its own, so a matching base coat is needed first. I called APS Tower for a third time this week and am still getting nowhere with them. Ineffectively friendly is my term for them to this point in time.

I'm sorry to hear that, I don't know what's going on there. I had super service. :Do No:
Ordered my seat covers etc from Legendary. 4-5 week wait time. dang. didn't figure that in........
BUT!! I did paint my console with the APS plastic promoter and lid with the black interior lacquer and it works great. Dried fast and results are good.

Hutch, Again you will have better luck just giving Tower the PPG paint code. They are not going to know any more what is correct for our cars than we ourselves. If you get the paint just test it on something to see if it satisfies you. Again there is no Pearl paint that GM used. They used Ivory for you combo according to the assembly manual. If you keep trying crazy things to make a pearl look on your headrests you will have a disaster on your hands. KEEP IT SIMPLE. PPG code for 71 Ivory is 8850. Tower can mix it in spray bombs. PPG will not make the spray bombs.

Jerry, You did not need to use the promoter on the console. it is a wasted step and expense. It is ABS plastic and is different than the seat backs. You do not need promoter on head rests either.

Hutch you listed 8892 code That is not correct for 71.

Hutch the code I listed for 71 will work perfect for the metal plates as well. No primer needed if the surface is good.

Roger that Dave on the no promoter for the headrests. Wasn't going to. But I figured it couldn't hurt on the bottom of the console, and I had a can that I wasn't going to use due to the purchase of new backs and bases.

Ok, thanks Dave. That's great, I was confused thinking that there was a pearl paint. If the 71 PPG code you listed for ivory is what's correct for this interior, then I'll just order that from Tower using the PPG code.
    Best regards,
    Hutch

Hutch, just curious. Does the original color of the headrests have a pearl look to them? I seem to remember them being a solid off white.

I just pulled them out of the box they're stored in. They do have a pearl sheen to them. I'm going to practice on some other material with the base ivory color and pearl on top to see if I can replicate the original color.
