Hi all, I have 2 71 GS Grills here, and as I am analyzing them to find the best one to remake the mold, I noticed they are different from one another? One has an additional piece, and design on the side, and the other is missing that piece and does not have that design, and has never been repaired? Were there two different molds creating these things? Just curious, cause I woudl have thought the injection mold would have been identical?

I know there were 2 production grilles in 1970.

It would not surprise me if they did 2 different molds again in 1971. The must have had 'breakage' or 'flex' issues.

    PS - Sleeping much dad?

    Jon,
You would be amazed at what you can see BEFORE you drink your daily six-pack! See, I told you they were different! I bet you can describe your garage floor in detail when you are passed out on it?????? :Dou:

Hey Marco, thanks for remebering me as a new Daddy! I get plenty of sleep.... my wife is breast feeding. :Brow: Ok, I hope none of the women on the board read that! Actually, little Wyatt is quite a good little boy. Doesn't fuss much!

They must have had two different molds of the 71 GS grill, cause they are obviously two different designs. I just found it interesting, knowing how many were produced, and how much the molds cost to make.

If you can shoot me some picts.

I could compare to mine (which I believe is original, and my car was a very early model year). At the moment, mine is hanging on the wall.:pp

I could check for the part # and maybe a date code????:Do No:

If there is a difference, I would have expected them to have made a running change. It could be that the 1st design had a high rate of rejection, forcing a permanent design change.:Do No:

Did I read that correct? You are making a mold of a 71'? Please say its true. 70's are everywhere, but us 71' guys need help too.

Yeah, I have already made one mold, but I goofed on it, and wasnt able to get the backing of it square, so they are wavy etc, Mold 2 wiil actually be front and back this time so it will be a true repro. It is nice having the mold aroud to pour parts for the broken 71s I repair. More to come later on that..... If you want to see the old mold and grill, go to repro parts, and look at 71 GS Grill prototype.

I should have a better answer for that in about a month. Still cleaning up the grille from making the first mold. Cracked it in a couple spots, and it needs some attention before I take the impression. After that its just about getting around to doing it. Wont be much longer though.

(It slipped past the "30 day" thing so it won't show up unless you change it to show 60 days or more.)
