Ok, I have done without a heater for a year now but now would like to hook mine back up which will require heater core replacement. My car was equipped with ac but I have removed all of the underhood components and installed an ac delete cover from american graphiti. I had the forthought to replace the heater motor at that time because I knew I didnt want to have to remove the fender again if the heater motor went out. Well guess what, my heater core sprung a leak shortly after I went through all that and I assumed I would have to remove the fender to replace it, so I just bypassed it.
I have performed a search here for tips on heater core replacement and found that there are some shortcuts for replacement that preclude fender removal. Then I looked in the 71 buick service manual. It says nothing about removing the fender at all. Am I missing something? Below are the instructions from the buick service manual (all 5 steps).

Step 5. Removing the nuts that hold the case. If you look at the firewall from inside the car its the bottom right stud that goes through the firewall. The nut is on the front side behind the fender and wheel well. If you drill the head off the stud from the inside you don't have to remove the fender.

The lower nut by the fenderwell is a PITA, but you can get it off.

Thanks, I thought it was strange that the service manual didn't mention removing the fender.
