For a GS? I'm assuming mine is bad. I never really use it, but turned it on the other day and got one swipe. I hear what sounds like a relay clicking when I turn it on, but does not swipe. Thanks
I have the whole set up if your interested the motor and arms i didn't use it in my car. I was told it works but haven't checked it out. You pay the shipping and we will go from there.
Check your ground, and power and tap it lightly with a mallet. Sometimes they stick, but that is usually a sign they are on the way out.
Yes Randy, I'd pay the shipping. My zip is 28269. Keep the arms though. Sell them or post them. I've had mine polished and looking good. The motor is the original that's why Im thinking I need a newer one or one that works. I think I used the wipers about 5 or 6 years ago when I got caught in the rain. I don't intentionally take the car out in the rain but if I get stuck in it ... oh well. I was going to a cruise-in a couple of weeks ago and there was a chance of showers, so I turned them on to see if they worked. Not. Checked the ground, fuse, tapped on it. Nothing.
Two different wiper motors This would not apply to a GS, but I am under the impression that for the 70-71-72 Skylarks there are two different wiper motors? One for hidden/depressed wipers and one for non-depressed wipers. Does anyone know if this is true? o No:
Absolutely true ! The hidden wiper system is different . Although most GS's came with it . One Ebay seller has 5 on Ebay right now reconditioned for 189.00 Buy it now . Just do a search and you'll find them . John
Thanks for the great INFO....that answers the question why "they" could never fix my wipers back in the early 80's. Wrong motor! :error:
So the GS is hidden/ depressed or non? I've owned a few GS' and a few Skylark Customs and they looked the same. I've never had to replace the wiper motor though. Maybe just the regular base Skylark adds to my confusion. Since the Custom and GS were closer siblings. I've never owned a base Skylark. Just curious.
Be careful if you are changing from one style to the other. The non-park set up has different arms, linkage, chrome windshield trim, motor & wiring. An existing intermediate jumper must be removed & the wiring reconfigured under the dash. The jumper is factory installed on non-park systems.
WHAT?! OK that's it! I'm lost! What do I need to know to replace my wiper motor correctly? In the Year One catalog I have on page 50 are the wiper motors. On page 96 is my car. (Not mine, but the same thing. Even the color) Can anyone show me the diff.? I have a 71 GS now. Thanks for the help and confusion. I'm assuming that mine are hidden with a demand pump. ?
Look at your wiper motor. If it looks like a rectangular box with the end attached to the firewall then it's the non-park. If it looks like the Y-1 pic of # SCO142, this is the depressed park motor.
heres a couple i have on ebay. the 1st one is an early 70 (white washer motor) the second is late 70-up (black washer motor) more than likely you should have the hidden wiper system. i believe the non hidden system only came on the base model post cars. ive had a couple of the post cars and they both came with the non hidden wipers, all other GS's ive seen had the hidden sustem. i could be wrong but it seems that way from my experience. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=120026127862&ih=002&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=120026128182&ih=002&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT
If you have the parking wipers, you might want to take the motor ass'y out, open up the gear/switch box beside the motor, and take a look. You can even jumper it to 12V and see how it's operating and what's wrong. I've been able to repair several of them where something small inside there was worn / broken. The Fisher Body Manual has the R&R info on them, if you need I can fax you the pages.
