Have 72 350 engine with two barrel carb. Comes with stupid idle stop solenoid shown in pic.
Would like to eliminate it and replace with standard bracket with idle adjust screw, like
might be on 70 or 71 similar cars. Has two threaded holes into manifold for present bracket.
Wondering what 70 or 71 engines have instead so know what they look like.
And does someone have one for sale. 100_1194.JPG

That "stupid" solenoid was installed on the '71 and up engines to prevent "run on", due to the increased idle speed and leaner fuel calibration for emissions. The "curb idle" was set, with the solenoid disconnected, at an rpm just barely enough to keep the engine running in P/N. Then the final idle was set with the solenoid energized and the vehicle in Drive, with the parking brake on. This way when you turned the key off, the engine rpm would drop down and the throttle plates would close more to keep the engine from "dieseling". You may want to reconsider removing it; it causes no harm or performance loss. Just an FYI.

Thanks, I did know it was to stop dieseling when turning off the ignition.
But is harder to set idle speed by sliding the bracket back or forward instead
of just adjusting screw like I'm used too.
Just like to keep things simple.

The idle speed is adjusted with a TURN OF THE END OF THE PLUNGER that has a hex head, I think its 3/8.
    Easy peasy.

    x2- very simple.

Tried that at first, thinking there must be a reason for the hex head, didn't seem like it did anything.
Maybe will try again, if I don't come up with new bracket which I still prefer. Have had a couple of
72s but they had transplant engines with no Idle stop solenoids. So thanks for advice.

The key must be on to energize the solenoid; engine should be running. If the plunger doesn't extend with the key turned on, it may be bad. Also check for 12v. at the wire terminal with the key on.

Thanks, it is a new solenoid so should work as you suggest.
Will tinker with it again, not sure how observant I was when I
rotated the hex head to see if I could adjust idle speed.
Works fine now with wire disconnected and using slotted holes in
bracket to adjust idle. So if can't find old style bracket will reconnect
and use it as intended. Have plenty of other things to work on like
new conv top cylinders, ebrake cable, etc., etc.! :)
