Ok this one has me wondering a bit. 72 GS there is the elbow on the air cleaner. The emission line comes from the tank and goes to the emissions cannister via a 3/8" rubber line in engine compartment, the second line coming out of the cannister thengoes to this elbow on the air cleaner via 1/4" line so the fumes get drawn in. I even checked the clip sizes as per assembly manual as 3/8 and 1/4" ID line clips Problem is, the elbow won't take a 1/4" ID line so whats up with that?? Elbow is 3/8" OD......hmmmm.... Thoughts?
Tim, The elbow that I have that goes to the bottom of the ram air cleaner has a dia. of 1/4" and is more like 3/8" taper at the very end of it. I had no trouble running a rubber line going from the canister to the elbow. Worst case I would think that you could file down the taper part a little bit.
Well maybe I have the wrong part?? o No: Looks correct, matches other cars I've seen but not likely to get 1/4" ID hose over a 3/8" OD fitting. Mine is constant diameter except where it goes int air cleaner, it flares out there for support and to hold the clip.... I'll take a pic when I get back. I was thinking 5/16" hose might split the difference. Thanks Tim
Tim, Here is a pic of my elbow and canister with a 1/4 hose. Even though the hose isn't rubber it has the same give to it. Seems to fit for me.
tim: the hose that u refer to, at least on my 72 gs, has had the end stretched to fit. now the hose is not just rubber. it is reinforced, but not high pressure hose.
Should just be emission hose. Just got home and took a pic...this is the correct elbow?? Later Tim PS I've seen some cars run that same line ot the port on the very back of the carb....
elbow woos hey tim,i have the black elbow that the guy has pictured above, that fits a 1/4 hose no problem.the clear hose i have seen on 70 cars(california emmisions),we need to look at part numbers, maybye they are different throughout the years.... o No:.............ok the gs aircleaners use a different elbow then the standard air cleaner.look at the hole in the air cleaner and you,ll see the difference.the standard air cleaner has a hole with a slit.,,,, the gs one only has a hole....but the charcoal canisters are same for all years ????...... ou:
The gm parts book only lists that (my style) connector as 72 to 75. As far as I know 72 was the first year to use this setup...71 went straight to the carb and 70 I have no idea (esp the calif cars). There is NO WAY a 1/4" ID emission hose will fit over the 3/8" OD of this tube. I tried. 5/16" ID will just barely go but its ugly but not sure if that will fit the purge cannister as its 1/4".... Maybe its the hose, I don't know...another annoying little detail to sort out. 72 assembly manual diagram also lits that same p/n and clip p/n...drawing looks identical to how mine looks (ie constant radius tube with flange on air cleaner end).
Tim, I also think all the 72 elbows were black, and the 70 calif emission only cars had the white elbows. I think you have the wrong part. Also, the emission canisters are the same for 71-72, but the one for the 70 calif cars is different. The 70 unit has 3 hose connector locations, with the outer 2 being used and the center one being plugged. Duane
OK, you are the master but all these parts came off 72 GS's. I have never even seen a 70 up here in all my 20 years with these cars so its pretty odd that two 72 GS's had this same part on them?? I iwsh I had paid more attention to how that stuff was all connected but who knew it would become an issue? Could it be a Canadian thing? That would make sense since it doesn't work!
Tim, I wouldn't say I am the master on 72 cars. With that being said, the hoses on my 71 GSX are original, and it has a 1/4" hose from the cannister to the carb, and a 5/16" hose from the cannister to the steel line in the frame. The 71 assem manuals show no clips on either end on the hoses, but mine had one at the front of the carb. (Red 3-fingered clip) The 72 assembly manuals show clips at some locations with later versions showing that more were added later in the year, so I guess it's a crap shoot as to clips. Can't tell you about the elbows, I have always seen black ones for 72 cars. Duane
My 71 has the same setup as your GSX. Much nicer if you ask me!! I might just do the same thing on my 72 as well for now except I think the 72 carbs no longer have that port on the front throttle plate....(there is one on the back). Do you happen to know the p/n of the white fitting?? I'd be curious to see if we can figure this out, somebody probably replaced the correct ones over the years The black fitting for 72 is 1240611 I am assuming as that is what the assy manual and GM parts book both say for 72. My cannister has 5/16" and 1/4" hose as well. later Tim
Elbow color? Whatever the color is supposed to be I need at least 1 !!!!! 1 for a 72 GS 350 , and if white is wrong for 72, I would gladly trade my white one for the correct color/ size for a 72 455 Cali car. Any help on this issue appreciated. :TU:
70 cars duane correct me if im wrong but the only 70 cars that had this setup where the california cars.regular 70,s didnt have the charcoal canister.i believe thats what the assembly manual says also. :beer
Yeah, Only the 1970 cars "bound for "California" came with the charcoal cannister. I say this because I once flew out and bought a 70 GSX in california. It was obviously built in Flint MI, but because the end user was in Calif, it got all the emission crap. Including the extra lines, cannister, moved/different windshield washer tank with mounting bracket, special aircleaner with extra hole, plastic elbow, special gastank, NA9 evap emission decal, different gas cap, and all the vapor stuff mounted in front of the gas tank. Tim, From the 70 assem manual, I am getting the number 1234556 for the 70 elbow. It also appears to look just like the one you posted, and had a 3-fingered clip on the hose. Duane
Thanks Duane! The other thing I was wondering about is why they moved it from the carb to the air cleaner at all, less flow (I can't see the pull off the outside of the air cleaner element being as much as a direct line to a carb vacuum post)?? Ok, I guess I'm in the market for a correct 72 style elbow... Be a good (easy) repro item, guys are always looking for it and here I thought I was lucky!! There must be something somewhere that will work...big vacuum fittings?
Tim- I checked the parts in question and this is what I found. Keep in mind my car is a 72 455 4 speed with a build date of 4-72 that was 100% original ( till I dismantled it).The air cleaner nipple is black and looks to be 1/4" the hose is definatley original and is still stamped 5/16. Hope this doesn,t confuse things more ! GOOD LUCK BOB BUICK
Tim, Those 70 calif only elbows are so---------- hard to find I think you would have no problem "getting rid" of it and finding what you need. Duane
