Just found this and almost moved on until I saw this dash plaque...which looks as though it's been there for a long, long time...:Brow:

    gotbuick What, me worry?

Poor thing looks like the Cuban's tried this Buick as a floatation device and lost it off the Florida Keys. Only to be salvaged for and e-bay auction...:(

    If it is an "X"

It will be one expensive resto. When I looked at it, I thought Mark had only bid on it for a parts car...:Brow:

Here is a message from the BPC from David Butts:

Oh yeah. I've seen this car. Up close and personal. It belongs now to a good friend of mine. It is really rough but is an actual 4-speed car. It has the speedo without the P R N D L1 L2 and is a non console, bucket seat car. Its a shame that the rust on this car looks as if it took place while the car rotted in someones back yard. It has a 1982 fl inspection sticker on the windshield and I dont think it's been driven since then. My friend bought it with the intention of rebuilding but it may be too far gone. It does have the entire manual tranny drivetrain intact and that alone is worth more than the reserve. I'd give my left one for a 4-speed car or all the correct parts to build one and if this one doesnt bring what he wants I may still end up with it. He has a 72 455 4-speed bench seat car he wants me to work on. Hmm this car may be a worthy trade for my time. ????? This car looks to have had an earlier motor put in it also. The ac box has an tell tale crack in it that usually happened during an engine swap and the heads dont have the 71 or 72 or later cast into them. Probably a 70 motor in it but I didnt scrape through the muck for an ID number.

I think the Sloan museum would be able to verify what options came on the car if you sent them the VIN. It would be interesting to see if it was ordered with the GSX options.

I have a 72 GS 455 hardtop that is factory equipped with GSX wing and Dash emblem. When I first found this car back in 1990 everything was there including the front fender GS 455 emblems however no GS emblem on decklid.I live in Canada and GM of Canada has always recorded all VIN's with there associated RPO option codes of all GM cars ever sold new in Canada.Needless to say, I ran the VIN and this car did not have the WA5 GSX ornamentation pkg option but did have the WA7 Rear spoiler option .One of 10 or so non GSX cars in 72 to receive a rear wing based on Doves' stats that there were I think 54 cars in 72 equipped with rear wing(44 of them on real GSX cars).
I feel that on the assembly line that if a spoiler was ordered you also recieved GSX dash emblem because the guys on the line thought maybe it was going to be a GSX and the stripes would be painted on later after the car came off the main assembly line, therefore a dash emblem was included. My car and this GS 350 verify this procedure. However, niether of these cars are the 44 GSX's in 72 as real GSX would never have recieved front fender emblems.
Running the VIN with Sloan will probably verify this.

    Rich,

All of my info shows that UPC code WA7 is for the front spoiler and not the rear spoiler. The rear spoiler is shown as part of the GSX ornamentation package (UPC WA5). Is there a separate code for the rear spoiler?

I have the production figures for '72 GS's and here is what they list:

    WA5 GSX Ornamentation = 44 cars
    WA7 Front Spoiler = 35 cars
    UB5 Hood Tach = 29 cars.(corrected 3/20/04)

I also have the production info for 72 GS convertibles and it shows that 1 convertible was built with a hood tach.

    Rich,
Was the car you found located near Aylmer, Ontario? I remember a real rough not running GS with a GSX wing and dash emblem sitting on the side of the highway back then.

You are correct the rear spoiler option is WA6 and is part of the WA5 GSX ornamentation package in 1971 and 1972.
To be exact in 72 the following stats are as follows:

44 cars built with WA5 GSX ornamentation Packages

72 Cars built with WA6 Rear spoiler option( I am assuming that this # includes the 44 GSX cars built leaving 28 straight GS cars built like my 72 GS455 and the GS 350 on Ebay with a factory rear spoiler)

35 cars bulit with the WA7 front spoiler(keep in mind this was optional on GSX and GS although it is safe to assume that probably half of the GSX cars 22 or so made up that 35 #)

Finally,29 hardtop GS cars and 1 GS convertible received factory UB5 hood tachs( again safe to assume that over half or 15 or so of the 44 GSX cars built had the factory hood Tach

As you can see,any of these options are super rare but by 1972 ordering flashy high performance cars was not the thing to do ,buying a 4 cylinder Chevy Vega was!

    Rich,

Thanks for the code for the rear spoiler and I now see the stat of 72 total cars built with that option. I made an error with my hood tach total, I put down the sales code "48" and not the total number of cars "29 Coupes"

Do you have a list of UPC/sales codes? I have all of the codes that are on the wholesale order form but I do not have a list that shows the other options available like the rear spoiler.

    Thanks,
    Mike
