i was wondering if anyone has ever chopped a 72 skylark or has seen one done. pictures of this would greatly help.im looking to customize and any info would be appreciated aloha geoff
Honestly, if it looked good I would say chop it, but it wouldn't look good. If you were doing a LOT of other suble mods and along with it was a very conservative chop, like say, an inch and a half. That could produce a very striking car, but your typical "chopped top", it doesn't work. Now, if you DID go ahead with it, ALL the glass in the car except the windshield CAN NOT be cut (well, there are rumors and old wives tales, but realistically, it CAN NOT) it is tempered WILL expode into tiny pieces when just about anything is tried. I have first hand experiance with this issue just saturday. I was tighting up a bolt on my drivers window of the wifes Windstar van and BAM!!!!! it was great, a BIG clean up, a number of cuts on my arms and $110 later I was out to dinner with the family. There are no ways you can "not roll the windows up as high", this is another old husbands tale. Try it, go out and roll the windows down a little, you will see a big gap on ALL sides, lowering the roof does NOT fill those gaps. So the long and short of it is, on a "late model" car it doesn't look good and it is an HUGE undertaking to pull off properly. Brian
I saw a LeMans chopped and it didn't look right at all. Here's a photo-chopped version. The pancaked roof is just how the LeMans looked. The curves are the same but when lowered it just looks wrong. The curves in these cars are crucial to their styling and lowering the roof just destroys the curves.
iwas thinking of a mild chop but looking at the picture it does seem out of place, thanks for the photo help. ill have to stick to some other ideas for the car thanks geoff
