I'm planning my needs for the front suspension rebuild and wanted to include sway bar bushings in the list - can anyone tell me the stock bar diameter for a '72 bar?

    Thanks!

If the 72 is the same as the 70, I believe it is just under an inch, like 31/32 nds. I use the 1 inch poly bushings on my 70 GS and they were fine.

The skylark came with a 3/4" front sway bar.
The GS came with the 31/32" or commonly refered to as 1" sway bar.
The skylark may have been upgraded with an option from the factory or installed by a previous owner. Measure it to be sure.

well, she definitely a stocker - original owner radio-heater-whitewall special. From what I can tell, only tires and routine maintenance items have ever been replaced... not likely he upgraded to anything else - only options on the car from what I can tell are the ragtop and automatic transmission. Not even p/s or p/b!

    thanks for the info!

I was looking at mine for this reason too. Mine measures 7/8 inch diameter on front of my 72 Skylark.

    So "1 inch" bushings work?

They must measure like measuring a pine 2x4 :) ???

If you are taking off the front sway bar you may want to look around for a 1970's Trans Am sway bar which is 1.25 inches and helps in the turns. I have one that is going on my '72 very soon. Here is an article from George's site on the sway bar swap:

The easiest way to measure is to use a open end wrench. It should be snug on the bar. The 1.25 bars are fairly easy to locate and do assist the handling greatly. You can get poly bushings ofr it and the holders at Auto Zone.

I used an actual micrometer, it was 7/8 inch.
So do 1 inch bushings fit?

I put a 73 Trans Am sway bar on mine, and it made a very noticeable difference. I paid $20 at a swap meet.
