Hi here is a photo of my 72 Skylark and the paint code is 63 which from research tells me it is what they call a burnished copper,is this correct? My next question is I want to repaint it myself and was looking on some advice on how to go about it,I really do not have the time to strip the whole car as I do drive it daily and cannot put it up for a extended period.I was wandering if it can be done without doing so.If so can it be sanded and maybe primered and reshot over the original finish and what kind of paint was it originally and what would be the best to use now over the original paint?I know its alot of info I am asking but need some good advice on getting a decent job done, does not have to be show paint as its a daily driver...Thanks.

Hi Bruce - whats wrong with the paint now - it doesn't look that bad? That will help determine the answer to your question. Also, ever painted a car before?

Yes I have painted one before but it was about 22 years ago,I think alot has changed since then, the paint looks better in the photos then it is up close,it does not really have any crazing or anything but it has some damage to the right rear quarter that needs attention and some small dings and scracthes too..I am going the original color so door jams and such will not be a problem as they are very nice yet, just hoping to do a job thats pretty decent and not real time consuming. Thanks Bill..........Bruce.

Hey Bill I forgot to mention that your comment about the car paint not looking to bad kinda made me chuckle,I was going to sell this car to a board member that was looking for a fixer car for 2200.00 and he said it was in too bad a shape.......Bruce.

If your car for sure has the original paint, PPG has a stripper just for laquer that effortlessly takes the paint and leaves the factory sealer untouched.
It doesn't work quite as easy on refinish laquer.
The problems going over the original finish is laquer is a solvent sensitive finish and almost any 2K urethane product will not be compatible over the top of it. Also with such an old finish, it would be deteriorated from UV exposure and probably have fairly poor adhesion. So the paint going over the top of it will only be as good as what's underneath.
If you want to go with a b/c, I would highly recommend either R-M or Glasurit.
They have b/c formulas for nearly any of the older colors.

Just go to Earl Scheib or the alike ...dont waste your $ on high line paint like Glasurit you will just be spraying $ into the air. You know whats going to happen when you spray fresh paint over a 30 year old paint job dont you? :af:
