Hey guys... I was stumbling through the local U-pull it the other day, and noticed this motor under a late seventies Regal. I first ignored the car, due to the the 3.8 badges on the one remaining fender, but a second glance revealed it has a V8 in it. So, being as I am on the prowl for a junker HEI unit, I took a closer look... It has the distributor up front, but for some reason, this thing looks physically smaller than our 350s. It has 8 wires, so it's not the V-6 (plus its longer than that). Is this thing a wierdo Poncho or Olds motor? The big question I have is will this HEI unit work in our 350s (assuming my eyes aren't playing tricks on me)? Later KFD
Well, I'm no expert by any means, but it does look like a Buick engine to me. However, I'm more interested in the rest of the car . . . Specifically the tail lights. Willing to go back?
looks like the engine was repainted from the original blue would could indicate that it is pontiac. could be a 305 ci.
I don't believe Pontiac ever made a 305. Olds, Pontiac and Chevrolet, all have their distributor mounted vertically in the rear. Buick and Cadillac have front mounted distributors, but that's not a Cadillac engine. It looks like a Buick to me, but I'm no expert.
Pontiac's 5 liter was a 301 cid, not a 305. 305's were Chevy's. Both Chevy and Olds did have a 307 cid but from different era's and no parts interchanged. The engine pictured is a Buick 350.
I took the distributor off that motor and put into what I know is a buick 350, and it fit, I paid $25 for it. The taillights were wasted on that car, but there were a few more '78-'79 regals in there... I don't know what this wierdo motor is, but the valve cover on the buick 350 is about 1/2" longer than the motor on this thing... And yes, it was blue underneath that red... I was really pissed when I came across a fresh '97 Sonoma that was in way better shape than my '98 is, and I am driving that! :banghead:
The engine is a 76-80 Buick 350...the carb is a dead giveaway and so is the EGR valve on the back. You can get the date code off the carb to verify engine year.
