I thought I read somewhere here on V8 that it was possible to modify gears and OR posi units to swap from an 8.2 to 8.5 or maybe the other way around. Would anyone here verify any of that?
    Brian Trick? Monaz?

I kind of doubt that, it would solve a lot of problems if it was possible. I know you can use a spacer if you have the wrong series carrier for the gears you want to use.

Only the cover swaps between the two rears. I believe Brian Trick was modifying/machining a bearing to work with the oddball 8.2 carrier size.

No, the covers are different, different bolt hole spacing. I learned that the hard way when I bought a girdle cover from TA. Their parts application description is confusing. Originally bought the 1808, and then discovered it would not fit my 1971 8.5 rear end. I needed the 1807, same cover for the GN's.

That would be cool if Brian can do that with the bearing.

THERE COMES A TIME WHEN ONE SAYS...WHY? AND BUY THE CORRECT STUFF.
How much power do you think this is going to handle with that long of bolts.
Some jobs you need to let pass on buy and let this guy put his name on JUNK.... lol.
I would not even video something like that....
WERE NOT LIVING IN A MAD MAX WORLD ....yet.... getting there though....lol.
But really, to each his own... if it works for him and he can sell it... cool.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

The posi unit for the 68-70 8.2” is NOT the hard part. Those can be made without any real issue. The gears can NOT. You can NOT modify a gearset from another rear to fit. The biggest issue is the offset that the 68-70 Buick rear has. Here is a picture that I took about 13 years ago of a 68-70 Buick pinion and a 67-70 12-bolt O-axle pinion. A lot of similarities, but the offset alone is why it will never work.

i DID ALL THIS years AND yEARS AGO. you CAN NOT EVEN WORRY ABOUT THAT OFFSET...there IS JUST more TO A 68-70 bUICK RING AND PINION ENGAGEMENT ...iT IS MORE LIKE A 9" fORD AS FAR AS HOW THE PINION IS POSITIONED down in the case more than a Pontiac and early buick. That is what gives that 68-70 buick rear a great ring to pinion engagement...BUT as Brian said...you can not just get conversion bearings and make them mess...I TRIED way l.ong ago. YOU CAN NOT DO IT...even with the correct conversion bearings and or shimming. CAN NOT BE DONE...period.
