Does anyone know part numbers for axle bearings and seals for 8.5 rear with bolt in axles. Appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    A9 bearings
    712146 seal.

Look for the correct width seal .490. I had issues with incorrect seal width.

Yea unfortunately I have found that out on my own with the seals. Just had installed the bearings and seals and discovered the excessive end play when installing the first axle.
Thanks for your help guys .

Brian trick makes a shim that may help.

I have shims, but I have also notice in recent months that there is an updated design on that axle seal, and it is thicker like it should be. So far,so good on those.

Yep, And I have been buying up straight NON tapered bearings and will be getting ready to build some of my 8.5 still on the shelf. I was afraid to build them till I found alternatives on this issue.

I started buying a bunch of the older Federal Mogal/BCA straight-roller bearings. You can have all the end play you want with those. They can’t unseat.

    Brian ,
Are you shimming between the bearing and seal or the seal and retainer ? I was thinking of doing that but thought it might be a little sketchy. If you had success with shimming I will go that route since I already have axles assembled.

I put the shim inside the tube, then install the axle assemble as you normally do. If you didn’t have the bearing/seal presses on the shaft, you could put it between the retainer plate and the seal, but at that point,I would just get the correct, wider seal. I should also note that you will never get zero end play with the tapered roller setup,BUT if there is excessive end play, the bearing will unseat from the race and the shaft will pull up on the seal and let oil leak out.

Thanks again guys for all your help and info.
Gonna kick it around and decide which way I’m gonna go.

boy that has got to be some serious thin doughnut shim. :)
You do not want your shim hitting the cage on the bearing when it protrudes through the race.

Yea just measured difference between the 2 seals , would be a .075 shim . That’s not too bad but I’m more concerned how my current seal nests against the retainer. I’m gonna lick my wounds and start over . Is there currently any bearings that are like the stock ones ?
If so would anyone have a pt# ?

It’s thin and does not contact the bearing.

Had a change of heart, after really looking at the situation the tapered bearings in theory should be better than the original, since they should take side load better. Made shims
    2.556 od. x 2.200 Id. x 075 thk.
    Worked out well.
Thanks again guys for all your help.
