Its inevitable that I am considering swapping my 8.2 3.42 posi rearend and upping to an 8.5 with 3.73 or 3.90 gears. I have been looking around on the web and have looked at several axle vendors,(Moser,Strange,Mark Williams). Their sites don't say anything about axles for the 8.5 that don't include c clip eliminators. I am very aware there are no c clips in a Buick rear. I just want to buy some same length axles to put bearings on and go racing. My question is how do you determine the correct length of an axle out of an 8.5 without an accurate measuring device? I just thought I could add some stock lengh axles and be done with it.Is this a possibility? Anyone know the spline count offhand for the axles? I am thinking 27-28 but have no axles out to verify this. Any input from anyone who purchased or use these types of axles???

Stock 8.5 A-body axles are 28 spline. Moser will be the way you will have to go, Moser doesn't have a "shelf" axle per say for this application, but thay can ck their files & get the critical dimensions & make a pair. Best to ck Mosers website & look at the dimension page & you will need to provide whether your 8.5 A-body rear uses A9 axle bearings or A10 axle bearings.
IF, the 8.5 A-body rear has the cut-out style rear cover & the big square lugs on the bottom, it definitely uses the A9's. IF, it the 8.5 A-body rear has round style cover & no big square lugs, you will need to measure the axle bearing diameter & post back, could be A9's or A10's.
