I am about to start disassembly on my 1971 8.5" w/ bolt in axles. 3.73 will be the gear going in. The question I have is with 28 spline axles do I go with clutch-type or helical gear differential? Eaton Truetrac 912A556 or Eaton Posi 19557-010 Driving will be street, with the occasional red light fun.
Okay, thank you. If I was to go to a 30 spline bolt in, is there an off the shelf axle? Or are they custom made?
The shafts need to be custom made, nothing off the shelf. It the right time to do it though. The shafts cost the same for 28 or 30 spline and the units cost the same as well.
I have the 30 spline axles, and Eaton posi. I was able to order the axles directly from Moser. Monzaz gave me an invoice # to reference to them. All I said was give me a pair of these.
The average person to call up and buy them with the shafts, studs, retainer plates, bearings, and an access hole drilled in each flange, will pay about $650.00-$675.00 with the shipping to your door. I order them without the bearings as I install my own. A pair of Mark Williams shafts for the same thing will be almost $900.00 for the pair.
So I have a set of Timken SET9 bearings and National 712146 seals at home. I would like to order the shafts. I also am installing the disc brake conversion 4WRO14542 from Right Stuff. I just want to make sure I get the correct shafts my rear rotor center is 2-3/4" and my rotor hat I.D. is 6-3/16".[/QUOTE]
I have all of my shafts made with a 6.00” wheel flange and a 2.75” hub pilot. Some of the rear disc brake kits, like The Right Stuff, need a 6.00” flange for the rotor hat to fit over. Inline Tube take that same kit and machines the inside of the rotor hat,so it will fit over a stock wheel flange.
Yes, but you should check the width of those seals. They should be .490". There are seals that are narrower, and that will create excessive axle end play. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/correct-wheel-bearings-or-seals.261370/#post-2146215 https://www.yukongear.com/shop/yms712146
